An owl tried to carry off a friends dog and the dog ended up having to have surgery twice before the injuries healed. I know you know the dangers of an owl being around with little dogs though. A nesting pair of barn owl can eat up to and now I forget the number but I think it's 1200 rodents in a season, that's for a barn owl which is smaller in stature than the great horned owl.
