WOW !!! REALLY I MEAN WOW

Sometimes we go through life with preconceived opinions that have no basis.

"I don't like squash."
"What don't you like about it?"
"Never had it but anything named "squash" can't be good."

Those kind of things and yes, I have been guilty. That squash thing was for real with me. A childhood logic that grew into adulthood with me.

For the past month, I have been in a bunch of pain from my sciatic nerve. I could still move but I looked a bit like Igor, the horror movie side kick, as I lurched about.

For several week I gave arthritis the credit for the pain but lately as it started going down my leg, I realized it was sciatica. I'd had it over 20 years ago when I herniated a disc and knew it could take a long time to get better.

With my heart condition, I can't take any pain pills outside of Tylenol which wasn't really effective. I was not a happy camper.

When I was in for my cardio check up on Thursday, my doctor said that my blood pressure was up. I asked if pain could cause that and he said for sure. We then discussed my pain symptoms. When I mentioned my leg pain his eyes flew open and he said,  "Girl, you need to see a chiropractor."

I never thought I'd ever hear those words from an actual doctor for I thought they gave that type of treatment little credit.  He then told me he'd had the same thing and a chiropractor put him right. He was so enthused that he made an appointment for me right then with one in town for the next day.

Well I had never been to one and really thought they were kind of the witch doctors of medicine. I never gave them any credence.  It was his enthusiasm and me being sick of being in pain that led me to accept the appointment.

A good friend's husband had used this particular chiropractor a few years ago
and swore he kept him from having back surgery. So I went with a half  open if  a
bit dubious mind.

Turned out he was good looking and had a great manner which were on the positive side. To my delight, he didn't crack my bones but used a variety of equipment and non-cracking moves on me. A sonogram, hip pressure, a deep massaging machine, and something that felt for all the world like a tiny jack hammer were his tools of choice.

He schooled me on muscles, nerves and how to sit. Don't sit with your knees higher than your hips folks. He mentioned couches are the worst offenders and mine certainly is.

When he was finished, I really didn't feel any dramatic improvement but neither was I worse and they set me up for twice a week appointments that I wasn't sure I'd follow up with.

Still not sold, I went home and took a 20 minute nap.  When I woke up the WOW moment arrived. I was almost pain free and I could walk with a totally
normal gait. My Igor, crab like walk was gone. I couldn't believe the improvement.

Now there were still a few twinges but mercy, I was SO much better than before I went to him.  My low opinion of chiropractors has ratcheted up dramatically.

That was on Friday.  Saturday I back-slid a little bit by probably trying to do too much and by Sunday I slid a wee bit more but was still much better than before.  Igor is still walking straight with just a tiny limp but definitely not lurching.
Yes I will be going back. Kind of sorry Monday is a holiday.

Have you ever had an unfounded, preconceived opinion that was later proven mostly or even completely false?  I keep finding that I am not too old to learn.

Oh yes, I eventually tried squash a few years ago and it wasn't half bad.

Hope you have a great Memorial day and take time to honor those who gave all. I certainly will.

Those of you in the path of Alberto, stay safe.

  1. So glad the chiropractor could help you, pain is an ugly intruder who should never be given our address.

I love that saying and will most likely borrow it. Thanks.

  2. For sciatica the best treatment and relief of pain is seeing a chiropractor. And for floating ribs. I'm not a huge fan of going to them but sometimes you can just feel when bones are out of line. Glad it's working for you. Have a good holiday weekend.

Well it was all new to me and so far I am impressed. We will se how it goes from here. Had to look up floating ribs.

  3. Well I'm glad the treatment worked! My mother had back pain her whole life (maybe that's why she's such a stroppy, bad tempered cow?) and went to see a chiropractor and she said it just made the pain worse. So I'm glad it's worked for you!

Thank you. I know your Mom was brutally hard on you but you may have stumbled on to something. I know I am not at my best when in pain. It might have been a factor.

  4. I'm so glad it's working for you, Patti. I have seen a chiropractor a few times, always because of my lower back issues. You need to take better care of yourself, girlfriend! :-)

Ha ha, I really am trying. Hopefully this will continue to help.

  5. I have been to a chiropractor before. I was experiencing some back pain, which I never thought was all that relieved by the treatments. However, I did go to an appointment when I had a migraine that was so bad I thought I might pass out in the waiting room. After the treatment, I walked out feeling and looking so much better that the receptionist actually gasped and two people in the waiting room applauded. It was pretty darn dramatic.

You really know how to make an exit. I use to have migraines and never thought of a chiropractor. So glad you had such great results.

  6. So glad you had a good result from your chiropractor, Patti. What? Sitting with knees higher than hips is bad? I'm doomed!

  7. I have experienced a couple of people in my life with preconceived notions of things they don’t like. Previous husband thought he hated onions and absolutely would not eat anything with visible onion. I was reduced to using onion powder (an abomination to a Cajun cook) to keep him from seeing it. He never knew he actually liked onion.

Same husband believed he was allergic to tomatos and would likewise not even consider eating one - but absolutely loved spaghetti and any other dish containing tomato sauce. He just didn’t Hank it was the same thing. He was a nuclear metallurgical engineer and incredibly smart - just had blind spots of logic.
Current husband hates sour cream. He has no idea how often he eats it.

Ha ha, those are priceless examples and classic. I love how you sneaked the offending food into their diets.

  8. Dear Patti, I am so happy for you that the chiro is helping . I've gone to chiropractors a number of times during my life, but when I had four slipped disks in 2017 that was just too much and so I needed an operation.

As to things I thought and then discovered they weren't so bad I think self-publishing is one. I resisted for years--tried again and again and yet again to get an agent--no go! So finally I self-published the convent memoir and I'm so glad I did. Peace.

Oh I am sure their degree of help is limited but in the areas that they can, the results are pretty dramatic.
      I'm glad you did also.

  9. Interesting. Glad to read about your experience. Remember when MD doctors did not embrace DO doctors. The health provider I use now has MDs, DOs, and.chiopractors working together. Hard for me to get my head around. I’ve never been to a chiropractor. I think I’m an education snob. MDs and DOs have somewhat the same level of education, same basics but at the fork in the road one goes the direction of medications while the other goes the direction of manipulating bones and muscles. I think chiropractors have a two year program of education. I never say never so one day you just may find me begging for help in the office of a chiropractor. Glad you experienced relief.

    1. Linda,
I was pretty much a snob also as medicine was a first love of mine. However, I guess there are niches where each is most effective. Interesting how doctors are now more on board. My doctor was a convert.

  10. I'm so glad to read this and to know that your pain diminished so much after that chiropractic appointment. I saw a chiropractor many years ago for my arthritic neck. He helped a bit and then he hurt it a bit. Lately my back has been giving me trouble and I have considered finding a new chiropractor. This post is inspiring and gives me hope. Continue to do well, Patti! Take care.

That kind of scares me. Will he eventually do more harm than good? I don't know but for now, I am impressed. Hope you find relief for your back. What I liked about this guy is that he didn't do any adjustments.

  12. I started going to a chiropractor after a car wreck where the ortho and nerve drs didn't give me any relief. I found that it took the chiro and a massage were my solution. After years of both I am relatively pain free. I swear by both. The chiro to straighten you out and the massage to keep those tight muscle knots from pulling your back out of alignment again.

    1. Barbara,
Ooh I so believe in massage. What a lovely way to spend an hour. When I am getting ready to croak, don't call a priest, call a masseuse. Thanks for the reminder.

  13. I have never been to a chiropractor and am still somewhat of a skeptic. When my back problems were leading to neuropathy in my feet the Orthopedic MD showed me the only fix for my condition, spondylolisthesis, and that was surgery, with rods and screws in my spine. It was very successful and I am so thankful that I had it done. Now if there was just a way to stop this arthritis in my hip and knee. :-(

    1. Linda R,
Yikes, they rebuilt your spine. Obviously not chiropractor worthy. I do hope you can get some relief for the hip and knee as I know you love being active.

  14. Glad to hear the chiro treatment was effective. I have a hip that goes out occasionally and while the chiropractor can get it back in place, I usually end up where I started when I get in the car, step on the clutch, to drive away.

    The massage sounds good though!

    1. Eileen,
That was one worry I had about adjustments that it might eventually make it easy for the bone to slip out once more. So far I am glad he hasn't done any. Me too on massage.

  15. Sciatica is a pain in the ... well from here to there! I've found chiropractic treatments helpful for that, but I've become so loose-jointed the "fix" just slides out again. I do get a prescription strength 'voltaren' cream from the dr called diclofenac gel. It's an anti-inflammatory, because like you I can't take anything other than tylenol. I put it on my knees, my entire spine, even on my newly acquired phlebitis. Wonder drug! Hope you feel better soon!

  16. Thanks for this -- I also suffer from sciatica from time to time, and I am hesitant to see a chiropractor. You've got me thinking. I live in California and use cannabis cream on my spine, and it really helps.

Welcome to TNS and thanks for commenting. I don't know, if I had access to cannabis cream, I might stick with that. We have approved cannabis for medical reasons in Arkansas but have yet to see the first store.

  17. When my Chiropractor moved to Oregon and sold his practice, I went into an emotional decline. He was who had kept me in "tip top" shape for 22 years. I just knew no one would care for me as a person as well as a patient like Dr Steve had. I was wrong thank goodness. The lovely man he sold his practice to is as sweet and considerate as Dr Steve and even more knowledgeable. Dr Randy is my every other week hero. As to the comment before this about CBD cream. Yes, yes and yes. Try if you haven't. I get mine from the Sisters of the Valley. Perfectly legal and so, so soothing. xoxo Oma Linda

  18. I have never been to a Chiropractor and most likely won't ever unless I am in horrific pain and that is my last choice for help. My daughter goes to one and the treatments help for awhile then she has to do it all over again. She seems to think Yoga helps her pain control more than anything else. No way I could ever do yoga. I have sciatica issues from time to time but usually ride it out for the long haul. I am very careful about the type shoes I wear and that helps a lot. As for squash, I love it steamed or fried. Yellow and zucchini are my favorites. Sushi is something I never tried and probably never will. Hugs sweet Patti, keep getting better and get rid of that pain. Tummy rubs and nose kisses for the furries from us.

Ha ha, pretty sure I have the same feelings about sushi.
I felt about chiropractors the same as you and if my cardiologist hadn't practically dragged me to the chiro, I would never have gone. I will see how it goes but I am impressed so far.

  22. I think it comes down to the quality of the service provider in the medical professions, including chiropractors. Glad if you get some relief from your sciatica. As a child I never liked tomatoes until my aunt made me a sandwich with a fresh big beefsteak from their garden — just bread, tomato slice and mayonnaise. I liked it.

  23. Now you’re making me want to come visit you and see that chiropractor. I have a friend in Illinois who did swear by hers. I’ve never been to one, but now you’re making me think I need to pay attention and see who is available here.
