ODD LOTS

Often when I get an idea for a post, I put a reminder under the blog title of Misc thinking someday I will get around to it.  Often as not, I don't.

When I get a goodly amount, I figure if I bundle them all under a post called Odd Lots--those which don't really qualify as a full post.  Though, I'm sure I could fluff some of these up and pass them off as a regular post but not today.

Today, you get the brief version.

I have a blogger that I visit whenever he posts.  He posts under the name of The New Robert Brault Reader He is a brilliant quote master and allows you to use his quotes as long as it is not for commercial purposes. Often he says in few words what others take pages to state. Example "If you can't forgive and forget---pick one. Robert Brault. That is a favorite of mine.

And if you want a chuckle:  "Actually, why pay for psychotherapy when there are so many numbers to call where they play calming music and tell you every two minutes how important you are to them." Robert Brault

Check him out, I think you will enjoy.

Do you find it frustrating when you go to open a new loaf of bread that the twist tie does not unfasten by turning left but you must twist it to the right to free the loaf. Come on, lefty loosey, righty tighty--right?    This aggravated me for the next time the new loaf would open to the left. Seems I was not alone in griping. According to Google-- When the bread tying machine keeps tying in one direction, it gets wound up like a spring, so it ties in the opposite direction to unwind itself then back the other way again

Ok, I'll buy that and will quit getting irritated. Thanks Google

Finally, there is a new social norm that I am having trouble adapting to. I am vaccinated and I only want to be around people who are also which includes service personal who come to my house.  Is there a non-offensive way to ask someone if they are vaccinated that doesn't sound like you want to know if they have a venereal disease? I almost feel like I am asking if their underwear is clean.

Any ideas? I'd appreciate it.

Also, don't know why Blogger keeps putting my type in different shading. Sorry.

  1. Patti, you could ask if the workers are vaccinated when you ring the company for service. With lung impairment, I won't worry about offending.

    1. Florence,
That is a good idea since I am not face to face with them on the phone but sometimes I just have someone appear at my door like the power company wanting to change my meter. I didn't open the door but I would have liked to have asked him some questions about the new meter while he was working on it.

  2. Oh, I like this idea. And I will definitely check out Robert Brault. I'm having problems with Blogger doing weird things too. Mercury is retrograde, maybe that's why.

  3. I've seen that name, Robert Brault in the sidebar of your blog before but never checked him out--I will now though, I love a good quote. You gave me a chuckle with the bread twisty thing, I have the worst luck with them and don't know why! And Patti, I agree with Florence--you have COPD and shouldn't worry about offending anyone. This summer when I had a bad leak in my bathroom ceiling and my landlord sent a plumber they contract with, they sure had no problem asking me if I was vaccinated before they came in here!

    1. Doug,
Think you will like Robert. He is so often on point.
I kind of like that the workers asked you. I live in a really red district and we have a very low vaccination rate. No one seems to care.

  5. We had two gardeners come and start working on our weedy front yard. When they knocked on the door to let us know they had arrived, they were both masked and announced, "We're here, and we're vaccinated!" We were so glad for that. I think it's absolutely fine to explain that you have some health issues and need to be assured that they are vaccinated.
    Love the quotes you posted.

Oh the joys of living in a state like California where people don't need to be beaten into submission but use common sense. Maybe someday here.
      Glad you liked the quotes.

  6. The bag of bread that REALLY p!sses me off is the ones from our stores' bakeries. They don't use Twisties, they use some kinda crap like cellophane tape and seal it. Directions say just pull...not in a million years. Does not work. I end up cutting it and used my own Twisties. PITA

Lovin' his quotes. Will check it out.

As far as service men/women coming to the house, just ask. No harm no fowl. It's my house, my life. I protect both. Or maybe when you on the phone reiterate your vaccinated preference.

Oh I know about those taped loaves and do the same as you. You are right about asking and I know I will get over the uncomfortable aspect in time.

  7. One of my dearest friends was planning a visit to my home before my hip surgery. I was very excited until she told me she had not been vaccinated for COVID. I could not run that risk for myself or my family. I responded to her with astonishment that she had not take the shots. Her husband had and her sons had, but she did not feel it was necessary because she had never been vaccinated for anything. !!! I still love her but am amazed by her belief. I did tell her not to come for the visit.

I too have someone like that and they are a family member, fortunately in another state. I have all ready had to tell her that my brother said he won't visit her when he comes to Florida. She did say she would get the shot if it were necessary.

  8. The quotes are hilarious. I think you copied and pasted from his blog and that is why the shading continued through the post. It's happened to me too.

We don't have twist ties on the bread I get from the supermarkets. Instead there is a little plastic tab...which can apparently be dangerous to elderly should it get missed in their sandwich. A choking hazard.

As for asking about vaccine status. I don't have a problem asking when I call to make an appointment. I'm not giving my business to those who refuse the vax. And with your health issues, I'd say it's more important.

    Take care, stay well!

Think you are right about the copying and pasting. Odd how it continues through out the post. Next time, I will not be so lazy. Thanks.
Yeah, I need to just get over it. After all I am paying them.

  9. I love quotes so I'll check them out. I put on my mask when I open the door and that seems to send a message. Most businesses here are requiring vaccinations but I ask anyway. If they don't like it, tough.

    1. Margaret,
I do that too and quite often they run back to the truck to get a mask. It's when they don't that I have to ask. Will try calling first.

  10. Good to learn about the twisties at the bakery. I've spent all of my 67 years trying to figure out which way they do it.
Good Person Award for defending yourself from non-vaxxed peeps. Don't feel bad. Just ask. Or state you'd prefer vaccinated helpers. You don't even have to have a personal health reason. There's a jillion reasons. Covid cooties hang in the air for 3 hours. I have a Command hook at both of my doors with masks. One is to grab when I go out, the second is in case someone comes to my door. I've told the maintenance guy to wear a mask when he comes in, and to come in at least 3 hours before I get home. When I'm home, I even wear my mask for 3 hours after he's been inside. I want to live. Linda in Kansas

  11. Just checked out some of the Robert Brault's quotes and loved them! Thanks!
As for asking about vaccinations, we haven't gone that far, but do have a sign on our door that says, "Masks required". And although most of our family is vaccinated, a few aren't. We haven't seen them.. and to be honest, I'm not sure if we're worried about them or us. We're vaccinated, but they're most vulnerable. It's a worry.

So glad you liked Robert. He makes me smile and nod my head in agreement.

  12. Mystery solved! I've wondered why the twist ties go in different directions for many years! I always use a wooden close pin to close the bags after I (finally) get those twist ties off. Thanks for the info!! Robert looks to be well worth reading.

Frustrating isn't it? How many times I would stare at it and think, Ok right or left. I almost always guessed wrong. Now somehow knowing why,I am not quite as annoyed. It almost seemed deliberate before:)

  14. I think asking when you call to make an appointment is a good way to go for checking on vaccination status.
I haven't noticed twisties from the store going the "wrong" way, but I do when my lefty husband recloses bags.

Oh, never having lived with a lefty, I wasn't aware that they twisted differently. Interesting. I agree, those I call I will ask first.

  15. Your Robert Brault quotes are terrific. I do like that forgive and forget quote. Sometimes easier said than done though.

We have casually asked some workers if they’re vaccinated and they’ve been OK with answering. So far, only one wasn’t… and we just didn’t change our expression. We didn’t hire him though.

Glad you liked Robert's quotes. I have tried to get my sister to follow the forgive or forget one as she has anger that is making her sick.
Glad you held firm with the unvaccinated one.

  16. Good post. I’ll visit the blog of quotes. I never noticed the bread tie conundrum. I just think the ties are apesty necessity.
I visit a nursing home thee times a week so I understand about people being vaccinated. I might live through it but I don’t want to be ground zero of people dying.

  17. I am not shy about asking if a person has been vaccinated ... but I usually come at it like this, "Hi, I know you won't find it odd to see me masked. With so many people unvaccinated it is my only way to stay safe." Their reaction to that tells me all I need to know.

  18. I get annoyed by the twist ties, too. I always thought it was done wrong by left-handers. Love the quotes....I ask about vaccinations with no compunction. I don't care if someone gets offended. It's my life I care about and if they don't care about theirs - poo on 'em.

  19. Judy,
That is the attitude I need to adopt. I'll work on it and hope they aren't armed:)

  20. I've lost my patience with those who refuse to get vaccinated and have no qualms about asking if they are. I even called my dentist's office to ask if he's vaccinated! And then went a step further to ask if all staff members are vaccinated. They aren't so when my teeth cleaning appt. comes up in February, I will request a nurse who's been vaccinated. I should add my immune system has been compromised due to liver failure with autoimmune hepatitis. If they have an ounce of compassion, they will understand my concerns.

Thank you so much for stopping by and commenting. First off I am so sorry about your autoimmune condition and hope you are being successfully treated.
Second, I am always amazed at the medical professionals who do not seem to care about their patients and are not vaccinated.
Me too on needing my teeth cleaned. I will check on my hygienist first though. Thanks.
