QUICK QUESTION
I have a question and hope someone has the answer. We most all know that Google Reader disappears on July 1st. Does Google reader disappearing mean my Blog reader is going to also since it depends on RSS feeds? I think it will but I am not positive.
I do use Blog Reader daily as it is super handy letting me know not only who has posted and when, but it gives me a snippet of their post which helps me remember if I have read it all ready or need to.
With the modest amount of followers I have and considering my age, it is possible for me to miss a post without this handy tool. Now I think our Blog List's won't be effected but I really prefer using the Reader.
I have been searching the net but haven't come up with a definitive answer, or at least one I understand and since my computer guru and friend passed away last year, I am reaching out to my blog buddies.
There are alternative reader services out there to switch to and I was just wondering if you have switched to any and are you happy? The service "Feedly" seems to be the easiest to transfer to and is free. All the new services seem to still have bugs to work out. Help!!! July 1st is right around the corner.
I have been really tempted to pull a Scarlett, let it happen and just " think about that tomorrow". That didn't really work out too well for her so I hope you can get me headed in the right direction. Thanking you for your help.
It is a good thing I actually like change.
I want to thank everyone for all your help. Some are as confused as I but others have all ready made the change successfully. We have had three months to do this and I waited till the last week.
I found this site at Crafty Cupboard that tells you step by step how to switch to the three top ones that have been mentioned by my followers.
I also found that my blog list can be altered to allow snippets by going to the dashboard layout and clicking on the edit key for your blog list. There you can add title , snippet and/or thumbnail to the list. Makes it cumbersome but for now it is a fail safe till I can decide which alternative reader I want.
Good luck all and thank you for all your help. You are the best.
Additional info found on the Net that answered most of my questions regarding whether Google Reader and Blogger Dashboard were connected.
"The reading list on your dashboard is based on the feed of the blogs you are reading and their feeds are not going away. If you have items in your reading list on the dashboard that are only there because you added them through GReader and they are not Blogger blogs, they might be removed from the list when GReader goes away but any Blogger blog that is on your Reading List because you used the "following" gadget on another blog to start following it, should remain intact."- Mishka"
Thanks Mary Lee for pointing me in the right direction.
I do hope this is true. Monday should be interesting.

ReplyDeleteYou are lucky that you DO like change. I don't. I'm just pulling a Scarlet. Ha Fiddle Dee Dee
I was completely dependent on Reader to tell me when someone had posted, and I tried Feedly, but I found it hard to use. Someone suggested I try theoldreader.com and I did, it's perfect. It imported all the blogs that I follow and I actually PREFER it to the Reader that is going away. It did take awhile for it to import the more than 100 blogs I follow, but once it happened, I am now very very happy. Give it a try.
ReplyDeleteMariette on http://mariettesbacktobasics.blogspot.com/ has a great post on this. Scroll down to see the post. I found it most helpful.
ReplyDeleteI don't use it a lot, but you know that if I let it go that is when I will need it!
Good luck!
Big thanks for asking these questions and bigger thanks for all answering. I will come back and study the suggestions and links. I read things on iPad, wondering how the change will affect it. I know over on Twitter Feedly is popular.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you asked this question!
ReplyDeleteWhat???? I'm really up on things aren't I??? I have no clue about anything on this and hope there's no changes. I normally like an occasional change here and there...mostly there...
ReplyDeleteI have signed up with Blogfeed. It's pretty good. You can also go to the blogs you follow and if they have an email sign up on their page, you can sign up and get an email when they post. Hope that helps some, Oma Linda
ReplyDeleteI meant Bloglovin.....see how it goes
ReplyDeleteI've been trying to find something that would work as well. Not sure how to proceed, but may look into some of the suggestions here. I don't like change either.
ReplyDeleteI don't even understand how Reader works!!! Hope you get some good answers.
ReplyDeleteI was never smart enough to figure out Google reader, or whatever it's called, so I won't miss it. A long time ago I set up another blog with blogger and made it private, no one sees it but me. I set it up for three columns so I could use the two side panels, the center column for posts remains unused. I'm interested in many topics so I use the side panels to set up blog lists of all the topics I read. Blogs on each of the subjects appear on the list by the most recent posting. It tells me the title of the latest post and when it was posted. I can go to that blog & scan the topics quickly knowing the latest posts are always at the top of the list. Works for me.
ReplyDeleteGoogle Reader is leaving????????????????
ReplyDeleteI want to know the same thing. Do you mean the list of blogs you follow that shows up on your dashboard page? That's where i read all the blogs I follow and I really hope that isn't going too!
ReplyDeleteI have no idea what is happening. I've been on a very long blog break and just returned. I have deleted my Old Weather Vane blog and started a new one. I need to catch up with your blog again. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens on July 1st.
ReplyDeleteYes the Reader is going away.. The dashboard should still be there though -which shows all of the blogs you are following...
ReplyDeleteI now use Feedly as my reader --and like it so far. I have heard good things about Bloglovin' though...
One thing I like about Feedly is that you an set it to only show the title of the blogs being posted... It is easier for me to use that list when I comment..
Good Luck.
Hugs,
Betsy
I do not have the answer to your question and hope someone else has helped or will. I have been subscribing by email to the blogs I follow that has that available until I decide if I want to use another reader or not. Hugs
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid that I don't understand either. Does this mean that on July 1st we will no longer be able to read the blogs we follow from the 'reading list' on our blogger dashboard? It sounds like the list will be there, but we won't be able to have the current posted ones available on the right to read??
ReplyDeleteI only use the dashboard, and I'm hoping it continues as is or I'm in big trouble!
ReplyDeleteI don't know what Blogger Reader is or if I have/use it. I guess I'm just waiting to see what happens.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why google is pulling reader- makes no sense to me. I saw someone else post that they liked feedly..
ReplyDeleteThanks for providing the information.
ReplyDeleteI have heard two things Parri: I have heard that our blog roll will disappear and I've also heard that it will not. I wish we could get a straight answer lol.
ReplyDeleteI HATE BLOGGER AND I HATE GOOGLE!
ReplyDeleteI honestly don't undderstand any of this and I was UNAWARE of this huge change.
this may be the end of blogging, for me....OY VEY!!!!!
I haven't kept up with what is going on. I don't use Reader, preferring to use the Blogger dashboard. Also, I have my blog list that keeps the latest post at the top of the list so that is a pretty good way to keep up. I do know that I miss some occasionally.
ReplyDeleteI do hope that nothing else goes away, as I don't like change too much. I subscribe to the Scarlett approach. :)
I've never had Google Reader so I'm assuming it won't affect me. I wonder how many other things I'm missing !

ReplyDeletewhat is Google Reader? Dang, I just go to my blog and see if anybody left a comment. I love change, but I keep changing back to what I was doing before I changed. Saw your comment on Fish Ducky and thought I would say Howdy to my neighbor. Jody, The Medicare Mom.
According to my DIL, I dont have to worry ... doesn't apply to me !!!??
ReplyDeleteHad to laugh this evening ...they had updated their phones and spent all evening oowing and ahhhing at what the new ones could do ...it was as though they were talking in a different language ...which I suppose they were ...I'm just happy when I can ring some one out side of my four walls lolxx
RSS stands for really simple syndication and was created to parse website feeds into a common and easily displayed feed. Google reader reads rss feeds and displays them for you. RSS is not going away just the reader. You can find a number of other rss readers on the web. I have no idea how this is going to affect the reader portion of the blogger dashboard!
ReplyDeleteBeing non computer literate I only hope my blogging life keeps plodding ahead on it own momentum...;)
ReplyDeleteDear Arkansas Patti, I'm no use to you here. This is just one more example of how technologically challenged I am. I don't even understand the question, much less the answers that others have posted here. I guess I'll just wait until Monday--July 1--and see what happens! Good luck on finding an answer. Peace.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you asked because darned if I know. I look forward to reading the responses, too. Since I've never done Google Reader, I won't have to Redo, but it's time I started doing SOMETHING, even if it means driving to Arkansas after you get it all figured out. :)
ReplyDeleteYou know, I have no idea! I probably will be one that looses all their followers as of July 1!

Good gosh! I have no idea what this is about either. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.
ReplyDeleteI'm late to the party and knew nothing about all of this, thanks for the links and heads up and info.
ReplyDeleteI switched to Feedly also!
