Two weeks ago I wrote about a couple I had been watching during the slow times at the Miami Marlins home games and how the man got his just deserts. Some of you wanted to know what happened after that game so here it is.
We finished our season rather sadly losing 93 games out of 162. Now 81 of those games were played at home so that was when I did my people watching. Now the man in question had totally ignored his wife/girlfriend for 78 of those games while he talked the entire game to his various friends while she stared expressionlessly out at the game. Then for game 78 he made a mistake and let his friend sit next to his wife. Those two laughed and talked the whole game--ignoring the husband. It really made my day but the second to the last game made my season.
That game, I didn't see it happen but somehow, he brought two of his regular friends and they sat on either side of the wife with hubby to the far left of the group.
From then on, she was Mrs. Popularity and he was hubby, who? Both of his friends monopolized her the whole game. They laughed and gestured having their own party and ignored hubby. Boy did he steam. He stared down at his phone, left, came back and continued steaming. It was like he was the soul person on a remote island. She was having a blast as were his 2 friends.
Again I missed how they left the stadium for the end of the game is all about the players.
The final game however, he had no friends with him and he talked the whole game to his wife. Maybe he finally realized she was interesting afterall.
So we had a crummy season as wins and losses go but I really loved how it ended with that couple. Hope the change lasts through the winter for her.
So my season is over and I hope those of you still in the hunt for the world series have a happy ending.
I will keep my eye on the Yankees as they have one of my favorite former Marlin players on their team--Giancarlo Stanton. Also keeping an eye on the Mariners as they have one of my favorite former Marlins coaches--Perry Hill. Will also monitor Cleveland for I have a soft spot for them. My Mother and I followed them on radio the summer of 48 when they won the world series. Wishing all of you good luck in the postseason. My season is over.
Patti, loved the play by play here! I'm happy for their happy ending, but did they know they were being watched like the games? I hope they return next season! 🙂👍
ReplyDeleteDoug,
DeleteGlad you enjoyed it and I just hope the new awareness of each other lasts. Guess I'll find out opening day next year.
I'm not much of a baseball fan, but our Mariners are making some waves! Love the story of the once-neglected wife now the belle of the ball!
ReplyDeleteDjan,
DeleteYes they are and wish them well. Loved "belle of the ball". I almost used that and now wish I had.
Belle of the ball (D J)...good play on words. You know I'm all for Astros. But Yankees I favor too. This is always an exciting time of year for me. As a child, my father was a Cardinal fan.so it's been a baseball family for 70+ years around our home.
ReplyDeleteThe fans at Seattle (and their arrogance makes me dislike both Seahawks and Mariners...as with Dallas Cowboys. For those teams, it's the fans that irk me). Jeter is still my favorite. I miss him.
Anni,
DeleteI just wish I could get the playoff games. Sadly I only can get a few as I don't have Espn. Know what you mean about Jeter. Enjoyed him as a Yankee but we lost him this year when he left our ownership. Miss him too.
I loved reading that follow-up on the couple. I'm glad the husband finally recognized the value of conversation and laughter with his wife.
ReplyDeleteI haven't watched a baseball game in a zillion years!
Robin,
DeleteLets hope he remembers that. If not maybe his friends will remind him she can be fun.
I know nothing about sports. My family is very ashamed of me when I ask if they are talking about football or basketball. But my favorite sport is boxing. If I were young and healthy again I would choose boxing to learn and compete. I do understand your sport of people watching which I could do all day long. The story of the lady getting her husband's attention once again is priceless.
ReplyDeleteAnnie,
DeleteHey, sports is not for everyone but people watching can be enjoyed anywhere--no admission charged. Glad you are a fan of that fun sport also.
The Marlins took out the Jays in two games. I had hoped it would extend to three, but in all honesty I expected this result. I haven't been watching baseball long enough to know the players on the other teams, but I am not a fan of NYY, with Judge. It seems to me he's good but overhyped.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear hubby got the message, loud and clear. Maybe his friends are his friends because they like his wife better. :p
Eileen,
DeleteSo sorry your post season was short but they really gave you a good regular season to enjoy. Can't say that about my team.
Lets hope hubby's lesson stays learned.
Now all of us, your blogger friends, will wonder about that couple too.
ReplyDeleteInger,
DeleteWonder if he realizes he was being watched and judged? I couldn't have been the only one to notice.
Yep, people watching is always fun. Hope that couple gets along at home.
ReplyDeletegigi,
DeleteI really won't know if the change will last till next Spring. Curious to see if it stays. Hope so.
Oh I just love how this played out Patti. Not the Marlins, but the couple!
ReplyDeleteYour stud Giancarlo may only DH I'm hearing. Better than nothing. I do not think nyy can close this deal but I will watch til the end for certain! Did you hear about chapman? Ooh, he is lucky George steinbrenner is dead. Lol
Peg,
DeleteI know you feel you have an overpaid player in Stanton but I started following him when he was a 20 year old up from AAA and watched him blast away for 7 years. I am just glad he is getting a shot at the big time and postseason. Good luck.
Didn't know about Chapman. Wow. Sounds like trouble had been brewing for a while. His ERA has really climbed.
People watching is a big part of the fun of live sports for me. I don't pay much attention if it's on tv. I do remember world series time as being something like a sacred retreat for my Dad.
ReplyDeleteOlga,
DeleteNormally people watching is not easy on TV but our behind the plate seats are close to the field and the attendance is so poor that it is easy to pick them out.
Every situation is interesting for us people watchers! The guy sounds like he needed a wake up call and I hope it lasts. Thanks for your good thoughts for the Ms!
ReplyDeleteMargaret,
ReplyDeleteMe too on hoping it will last. Maybe his friends will remind him to pay attention to home.
I wasn't much of a baseball fan since I left high school but we got a small league team here in Walla Walla and I started going to games and enjoyed them. Root, root, root for the home team. And the people watching is great.
ReplyDeleteCelia,
DeleteGlad you have a small league team to enjoy. I use to go to the Dodgers AAA team in Vero Beach and liked it even better than the major leagues.
Our Sounders soccer season is over so we are switching to Mariners Baseball and women's soccer, Seattle Reign. Playoffs for both! Thanks for the Mariners support!
ReplyDeleteLinda,
DeleteSorry the Sounders are out but glad you have the Mariners and Reign to follow. Mariners are looking good.
I'm thinking she realizes the dude is a d*ck and leaves him and has a fling or two with her new friends!
ReplyDeletejoeh,
DeleteI could live with that also. Serve him right.
Smart man, realising his wife is still interesting and fun, presumably just as she was when he married her.
ReplyDeleteRiver,
DeleteSometimes we need a good jarring to wake us up. Hope he is awake now.
I love people watching. It is very interesting and educational. He was a bit up there in years not to have learned what is good for the goose is good for the gander. http://maitaiormargarita.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteNot sure why it keeps showing me as Anonymous
Sue,
DeleteHe obviously is a slow learner. Maybe this time?
Sorry you are having trouble leaving a comment. Hope blogger quits being cute.
Haha the couple sounded more interesting than the game. Well definitely to me anyway as I don't like sport!
ReplyDeleteJoey,
DeleteEven as much as I like sports, it was good to have a little drama behind home plate to keep me interested.
Oh gosh! Thank you for this fabulous post, Patti. I'm glad that guy finally discovered his wife. She was awfully, awfully patient with him though. I would never had stood (I mean sat) for that kind of treatment. Sheesh! I repeat. You tell the best stories!
ReplyDeleteKay,
DeleteWe can only hope he wasn't too late. I won't know till next Spring if the awakening took. Thank you so much for the lovely compliment. You always say the nicest things.
Dear Patti, I thought I left a comment here but I must have been in a "dream trance!!!!!" Anyway, I'm glad the man finally realized the treasure of his wife. Peace from Dee Ready
ReplyDeleteDee,
DeleteI found your thoughtful comment only you somehow posted it on last weeks post. Me too on being able to watch him realize he had an interesting woman all along. It was like a butterfly being born.
Dear Patti, thanks for looking for that comment! And yes, I so agree with you about the butterfly! Peace. Dee
