THAT WASN'T FUN

I really don't have much for today.  I have spent the past week enjoying??? a head cold.  Now there are nasty colds and OK colds. I feel lucky mine was kind of inbetween.

At first I thought I was dealing with allergies as I was sneezing up a storm along with nasal congestion and no fever.   I have always kind of prided myself on my sneezes.  I manage quite lady like ones. Just a little quiet "zisst."  People are usually amazed that it was even a sneeze. Also I normally sneeze one and done.

This time I would sneeze 7 to 10 times in a row and it sounded a lot like a seal barking. Good thing I don't have any really close neighbors. It wasn't painful or terribly unpleasant, just really loud and forceful. Fortunately my bladder didn't fail me with all the violent sneezing.

Where I got this ailment I have no idea. I have been following Covid procedures fairly well so I am thinking it might have been delivered with my grocery pickup.  I did get my flu shot so maybe that had a tempering effect on something that could have been worse.

Anyway, I am hugely better now and hope to have a real post next week. Hopefully my badge of honor for enduring the cold--a cold sore--will be gone by then too.

Oddly my sister in Florida had a very similar bout at the same time. So maybe it is a "thing." Hope you are spared anything similar.

We did get snow yesterday which was a nice diversion. It was mostly gone by noon but still pretty to wake up to and it made me smile.

Stay safe and well.

  1. My dad used to have those, several sneezes in a row. It made me worry, the pressure it put on his heart. I sure hope yours is doing okay. I hate head colds, I'd rather have a stomach bug! Well, glad you got to see some snow. With the holidays approaching I think I'm ready for some of the same. Please get better as soon as you can Patti, looking forward to more from you soon. 🙂👍♥️

    1. Doug,
My brother is a bit famous for his consecutive sneezes. Can't say I want to go for his record.
I had a bit of a relapse this morning but am recovering.

  2. I think minor head colds are inevitable, Patti. Gives our bodies some practice in churning our virus killing cells. Stay warm and drink plenty of delicious fluids. Soup and the occasional hot toddy works for me. Cold sores -- Ugh!! I hate them!!

Oh I wish I could drink a hot toddy for my Mom gave them to us when we were kids but I can't drink alcohol. Cold sores sure take the fun out of eating.

  3. I personally think it's an after effect from the boosters. After my booster shot... about 3 weeks later, I had the sneezies. It's a delayed reaction??!!

I haven't had my last booster yet but did get the regular flu shot about a week before all this. Maybe?

  4. I am hoping to stay virus free for the rest of the month, since I'm traveling by plane and will also be exposed to lots and lots of family germs. Glad you're getting better, Patti.

Thank you. Be careful and keep up with the Covid preventions. I don't think we are finished with the various bugs out there yet.

  5. This neighbor Okie of yours has had all the exact same symptoms. We are supposed to get some snow today so I have to make myself get out early and run errands but I will be sneezing loudly all the way.

Thanks for letting me know who Anon was. So sorry you have had to deal with this also. I really think it is a "thing". If you are still sneezing, you ought to clear a path where ever you go:)

  6. Oops, I made that last neighbor Okie post and it will show as Anonymous.

  7. Glad you are feeling some better. There are a lot of bugs out there. My grandson was out of school for a week with a cold/flu type ailment. Not Covid as his mom tested him regularly.
My mom used to make up a mixture of glycerin and hydrogen peroxide for cold sores. I can't recall the percentages but it worked than any commercial product I've tried. Lysine is one I use and it is pretty effective.
I'll send you all the snow you want...the post office probably won't like though.

Yes, I am pretty sure we aren't done with bugs yet. Hope your grandson is fine now.
I got some Abreva which seems to be working.

  8. There really is something going around these days all over the country. We have family members with viruses here in California (close by and 700 miles away). It's time to be very careful especially with the holidays coming. Take care there, get well and stay well. Thinking of you.

  11. Jean,
Me too. I haven't had a cold since 2019. I figured Covid preventions worked for colds too. Maybe I got a bit careless.

  12. Glad you are feeling better. Germs are definitely increasing in Florida. A few of our neighbors have been ill. One with Covid.

Yes, My sister lives in Fl and she has the same crud. Do you suppose the snowbirds are bringing it with them? My brother is heading there next week. Be careful.

  13. I agree with you that all our Covid preventions may have helped keep away colds and other viruses... so I will continue them (especially in flu season). As for sneezes, I do 3... one right after the other, then a delay (where DH says 'wait for it'..) and I sneeze a 3rd time. It's kind of funny. But hopefully you are on the mend!

Thank you. I am better than I was before. That is funny about the 3 sneezes. You are consistent. When my brother starts sneezing his wife starts counting out loud. He is usually in the teens.

  14. I hope you're feeling much better, Patti. Try Lysine tablets for cold sores - can also buy a lysine salve with honey that soothes the actual sore.

Thank you, I am much better than I was at the first of the week. Several have mentioned Lysine but when I checked, I can't take it since I am on blood thinners. Fortunately, the cold sore is getting better also.

  15. I'm doing a lot of sneezing myself, but the culprits here are the flowering white cedar tree and a ton of dust from when I moved everything off the top of the back porch cupboard so we can move it tomorrow and clean eleven years accumulation of dust and dead critters from behind it, (snails, millipedes, earwigs etc) and cobwebs, enough to reach the moon if we strung them out I'm sure.

You make a good point. I am sure I have some cat hair corners that could stand a good cleaning. Amazing what gets behind stuff and out of sight--out of mind. Thanks.

  16. I haven't stopped in for a long time. Hope your cold gets better soon. Strangely, I have been experiencing the exact same thing for about 10 days. My throat is pretty sore and today I went hoarse. Let's hope we both kick this thing soon! Tara, 86,4000 Seconds.

  17. Glad you're better. Even masked I started coughing like my home patient's 3 year old cousin did for 3 days. Yep, coughed the next morning. Went to the doc who tested for 4 things: Type A flu. Even with my asthma doc's help and 20 days of blasted antibiotics, it's taken a month to stop coughing. Got well long enough to get my annual high dose flu shot; covid #5 this week! Don't hesitate to use a home check kit. Linda in Kansas

    1. Linda,
I did use a home check test (negative) but it was really close to its use by date. Probably need to get some fresh ones. That coughing sounds much worse than what I had. So glad they have stopped it for you. Am up on my flu shots but need the #5 Covid one. Be well.

  18. I'm glad your cold wasn't too bad and you survived it. This year I had the covid booster and a flu jab, which is the first time I've had it but I thought it makes sense to do all I can to protect myself. Glad you did the same. Snow?? Wow we are just having non stop rain. Well it is the UK, after all!

  21. An ice cube applied to a cold sore for about 30 seconds 2 or 3 times a day when they first appear will make them disappear within 3 or 4 days, and if you can catch it when it's just tingling, sometimes they never go any farther than that! It's magic. 8>)
I haven't had a cold for almost 3 years but before Covid I had 2 every year. Still, I would have gladly endured a few colds if that somehow would have made a difference for the millions who succumbed to this awful virus.

Thank you so much for stopping by with such a great tip. I will definitely file it away for next time. This time I got similar relief with an OTC drug Abreva. Now I have two weapons.
It was 2019 when I had my last cold. Pretty sure the Covid proventions are responsible for that. Like you, wish it had worked as well for all those who died or suffered Long Covid.

  22. Art always sneezes at least 3 times. I think I do two sneezes. I was at a funeral on Wednesday and I had this violent coughing spasm. It was awful. I finally couldn't hold it in. Arrrghhh... I was so embarrassed. And yup, that bladder thing as we get older is a hassle. Good thing I was sitting down.

  23. Kay,
Oh no, why is it always at a funeral? Pretty sure your coughing cleared the area around you.
