I was talking on the phone to a friend of mine today who is recovering from neck surgery. One thing you really shouldn't do is make someone recovering from surgery laugh but I thoughtlessly did.
Being Mother's day we were talking about our parents. She was asking if my parents got along well and I said "Oh yes they got along great and I know they had a great sex life for I actually I walked in on them one time."
Well since my friend feels she must be the only one who has never witnessed their parents in "the act", she wanted details.
It was when I was 11 years old and we lived in Key West. I use to baby sit for several Naval families with young children. Yes, that seems young to be responsible for another's child but I really had several customers. That I charged a measly 20 cents an hour and was fairly responsible is probably why I my services were sought after.
Somehow the people I was sitting for that evening had a change of plans and came back early so they brought me home. My brother was at a ball game and I was not expected.
I walked into the kitchen and saw our little dog Susie mornfully sitting at my parents closed bedroom door. Knowing she had bedroom privileges, I opened the door to let her in.
If I hadn't heard laughing I would have thought they were violently fighting but since I was privileged to the facts of life, I recognized what I saw. Horrified but quietly, I closed the door with Susie inside.
Now Susie was a toy Fox Terrier and she really had an attitude about people fighting, even in fun. She would bite who ever was on top. We could never horse around when she was near. She meant well but the bite was painful.
Pretty sure she got Dad on the butt for I heard him holler.
I didn't know what to do so I scurried to the living room, picked up a book and pretented I had seen nothing. They came out in bathrobes and asked me if I had let Susie in the bedroom. I lied and said no. They knew I was lying but nothing more was said. We were all red faced that day.
The odd thing is that for weeks after gleefully I examined my Mom very carefully looking for the signs of my new brother or sister growing. At that time I thought sex between parents was only for procreation not recreation. I was sorely disappointed when nothing happened. I was outnumbered two to one with brothers and really wanted a sister.
Nothing grew in Mom and it was almost forgotten, till today.
Did you ever catch your parents or worse yet, have your kids catch you? Does it still embarasses you or can you now see the humor?
To answer your questions no & no respectively!!
ReplyDeleteAnni,
DeleteHa ha, lucky you and that is certainly a succinct answer.
Haha!! What a great story! Reading your poor Dad holler when Susie bit him made me laugh out loud, I hope I didn't wake my next door apt neighbor as I'm reading this in bed! Patti, I wish I had a funny one of my own, you'd think with six kids in my own family but nope. Anyway, for an 11 year old you handled things very well!๐
ReplyDeleteDoug,
DeleteSo glad I could give you a laugh this morning. All I can say is your family was better about being descreet. It really didn't scar me but I was disappointed I didn't get a new sibling out of the deal:)
No, I never did see my parents in the act. But they sure made lots of kids while nobody was looking! Your story made me laugh, too. :-)
ReplyDeleteDjan,
DeleteSo glad I could give you a chuckle. Your parents were much more careful than mine were. Maybe yours realized that most doors have locks:)
Hilarious! No, I never caught them in the act, but Mom gave birth 7 times, so that's something to consider. My kids probably heard us, but did not see us having sex.
ReplyDeletegigi,
DeleteI guess with so many kids in the house, your parents knew they had to be careful. Glad you were spared your own kids catching you:)
That's truly a funny story and I laughed out loud. Probably the one time you didn't get called out for lying.
ReplyDeleteJean,
DeleteHa ha, don't know how we would have handled it had I told the truth. The lie saved face for all.
That is so funny! Oh my!!! I never walked in on a relative but a friend and her boyfriend nicely let me visit her once and sleep on her pullout couch. They had a roommate, so I was instructed to use the bathroom in their bedroom. The other bathroom was the roommates. Unfortunately, I decided I needed to use the restroom and did not question the closed bedroom door. Oh my!!!!! We all screamed.
ReplyDeleteSue,
DeleteNow that is funny but since you were all adults, I am sure you got some laughs about it.
That is such a funny story, Patti. No, I never caught my parents in the act. Now that I think about it, I don't think I've caught anyone in the act, and I've lived with lots and lots of people over the years. Although, I do remember hearing the ecstatic sounds of joys coming from a roommate's bedroom.
ReplyDeleteRobin,
DeleteHad to laugh at your groaning roommate. I had one like that once but they usually went to his place.
Patti-- I meant to also comment about baby-sitting way back when. I also started babysitting when I was young. I was 10 years old when my neighbors had a baby. I used to watch that little one while the dad was at work and the mom was napping. A bit later on, they would both be gone, and I watched little Debbie. Pretty crazy.
DeleteRobin,
DeleteI know. Recently a mother was charged with endangering her child for leaving her her toddler with her 12 year old child. Shoot, we did that and were actually paid. Times have changed.
Aw, your poor parents, Patti. What a mood killer! My answer is 'no' and 'no'. Thankgoodness for that! I hope your friend's neck surgery recovery goes well. Laughter is said to be the best medicine.
ReplyDeleteFlorence,
DeleteYou know, I never thought about Susie cutting things short for them:)
Thanks about the good wishes for my friend's recovery.
The answer here for me is no and no... at least not as far as I know about the second.
ReplyDeleteRian,
DeleteAt least if there was an episode on the second part it is good that all was kept quiet. It doesn't usually come up in family discussions:)
What a great story! Your dad getting bit on the butt-LOL! No and no. That would have been embarrassing. (bare assing?)
ReplyDeleteMargaret,
DeleteHa ha, nice play on words there:)
My dad remarried after mom died so we saw and heard a lot sadly. They were grabby newlyweds. We 5 girls tease them a lot as we became adults. They took it well.
ReplyDeletePeg, Ooh, newly weds. Bet that gave you some moments and cute that you could tease them later.
DeleteI can answer no to all your questions. It must have been an uncomfortable moment for sure, and for all concerned. Childcare has become so very expensive - people would love to pay your hourly rate now!
ReplyDeleteVagabonde,
DeleteIt is not a situation I suggest parents and childs sharing. When the horror wore off, it did get funny.
I was a cheap sitter even in those days which was why I kept busy.
Yep, sure did. I was 21 and absolutely should have known better than to come in without knocking. It was never spoken of๐
ReplyDeleteNancy,
ReplyDeleteHa ha, I understand for my parents and I never discussed it either.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Nope, but the dog does add an interesting element to the story.
ReplyDeleteLinda,
DeleteWith out the dog no one would have noticed I had stumbled upon them.
No and yes.
ReplyDeleteOlga,
DeleteOh dear, that yes had to be embarassing.
I got .50 an hour...inflation.
ReplyDeleteIt was not until I had children that I figured out why my Pop always insisted "It's late, go to bed dammit!"
Got caught once in the family room by a roaring fireplace, the youngest wanted some water. We told him we were just play wrestling.
Joeh,
DeleteWow you were in the big bucks.
Your fireplace romance was really cut short. Perhaps the youngster was young enough to believe you.
Well, you're laughing so I guess you weren't scarred for life! As for me: No, and ... I don't think so.
ReplyDeleteTom,
DeleteHa ha, no not scarred but I was disappointed that I didn't get a sibling for all their efforts.
I guess that isn't usually brought up at family gatherings so you will just have to assume you weren't:)
Nope, never caught them. One rule in our house was to never open mum and dad's bedroom door, no matter what.
ReplyDeleteRivber,
DeleteI guess my parents could have issued that rule but they were convinced all the kids were gone that day. Oops.
I started babysitting in the neighborhood when I was 10 for 25cents an hour in 1961. That was quite normal back then.
ReplyDeleteI only caught my parents kissing--a peck on the lips--goodbye when dad was off to work twice in my whole life. Those Swedes never touched each other so it was quite shocking. I had a bedroom right next to theirs and never heard a sound--and I have been a night owl since birth. Wouldn't exactly say they were a lovely couple--hehe! ;)
Rita,
DeleteWe were both babysitting tycoons:) Still that was easy and fun money.
I would say your parents were very careful.
Yes. When I was probably in the fifth grade I heard noise one night and got out of bed, went to my parent's bedroom door. The door was slightly ajar and I could clearly see my mother and the man she had recently wed engaged together. I knew instantly what was occurring since my mother had educated me about the birds and bees. I instantly went back to my room and bed. They never knew I saw them and I never told her. The visual image is burned into my memory. When I became wed myself and have thought of that I've had questions in my mind about how satisfying my mother's position and pleasure would have been, especially given some things she said to me over the years about what she was taught about sex. I never talked with her about it. I, too, did some babysitting at a young age. I don't recall what I charged but I sure appreciated earning that money.
ReplyDeleteJoared,
ReplyDeleteOh my, you had to deal with newlyweds. I never mentioned it to my parents either since I had openly lied to them.
My Mom also taught me about sex. To keep me from experimenting, she told me only married people did it and it was to have children.
I never caught my parents, thank GOD! But my young son did catch us. My son was 3 at the time so I believe we carried off a good explanation and I doubt he even remembered it then or now.
ReplyDeleteAnnie,
DeleteThink you were safe that he was ony 3. I sure don't remember anything from being 3 except having a daddy long legs climb down the wall towards my high chair.
Hum maybe he does remember :)
I never actually caught them "in the act" but I would often hear them. I remember that the first time that happened I asked my mother and she said "It's just the way that daddy and mommy say they love each other and our whole family."
ReplyDeleteThat satisfied me and years later when I found out what it really was I thought my mother's answer was lovely..
Ginnie,
ReplyDeleteAww, that was really sweet how she phrased it. .
I never caught my parents, nor did my children walk in on me and a partner. But I did barge into my daughter's bedroom one night when she brought a friend home. She was in her 20's at the time, I heard a strange noise and leapt out of bed to check. Good for them that I can't see much without my glasses. I recall she hollered, "mom", I mumbled sorry and went back to bed. We have never talked about it since. ๐
ReplyDeleteHahaha. No I never caught my parents at it, but my sisters and I did find used condoms in the toilet. As adults my sisters would tease my mother but she never found it funny.
ReplyDeleteOh gosh! You made me laugh too. And you'd think I'd be too tired to laugh right now since I'm seriously lacking sleep. And no, I didn't walk in on anything and my kids never walked in on us either. I think. I did have a friend tell me that their 2 year old walked in on them, climbed on her father and said, "giddyap!"
ReplyDeleteYes, our daughter came in the room and stood quietly at the foot of the bed one night when she was about 4. I hope she thought we were wrestling, but it may have scarred her for life!
