WHEN THEY DON'T

Continued from last post.

One of the main reasons I went to the four ball tournament was to see one of my heroes. I have mentioned before that I am a fan of the "Dudley Do Right" type of man. I adored Perry Como, not only for his looks, his voice but also his solid reputation as a great family man and all round good guy. Plus the guy could rock a sweater. However, after my meeting with The Great One and Arrogant Golfer Guy I was a bit afraid to meet Mr. C.

Jerry had some business to attend to with the tournament so he handed me off to Jack who knew Perry personally. Now both Jerry and Jack were much older than I and married men.  I am pretty sure I fell into the daughter or "pet" category for both men. They were equally solicitous and protective. I loved them both for the care they showed me that day.

"So you really want to meet Perry?" Jack asked. "He and his wife are dining privately but I can take you there."

I assured him I was desperate. We then started to wander thru the bowels of the country club. I thought Perry would be dining in some grand private dining room.

The truth was not what I expected as Jack led me to a large room that was empty of everything but one small table and 4 people. The small group looked up as we approached.

Perry smiled big time as he recognized Jack. He rose from the table, accepted the introductions, took my hand in both of his and said he was so pleased to meet a friend of Jack's. Perry then introduced me to the lovely blond next to him, his wife Roselle.

I grinned like I had no sense and said nothing. My mouth opened but nothing came out. I was struck dumb. I desperately wanted to be cool but it wasn't to be.  Perry offered to let us join them but Jack said no, we had all ready eaten, so he said goodbye (I was still just a grinning mute) and we left the room.

Jack had previously told me how much Perry was devoted to his wife. Jack and Perry played cards together and often Jack would try to coax Perry to go out on the town afterwards, but Perry always said."No thanks, I want to go home to Roselle." Not "I have" to go but "I want" to go home.

I ended up at Perry's house at a later date and he actually greeted me by name. The man was renown for remembering names.   I still was the grinning mute for that meeting. I am sure he was convinced I was impaired as he spoke loudly and slowly to me.

But, back to the country club. When I recovered my speech and ability to breathe, Jack handed me back to Jerry.

Jerry was handing out the awards for the tournament and took me to the ceremonies. After the awards were handed out, Jerry said one of the golfers wanted to meet me and was I willing? He pointed out Jay Hebert (last name pronounced A-bear).

Now Jay was "the" bachelor on tour so I naturally said yes. Jay was a ruggedly handsome man and a renowned southern gentleman. It was rumored that he was one of the original Marlboro men in those sexy ads.

Jay wanted to know if I would join him, his brother Lionel and Lionel's wife for a late dinner. I said I would and Jerry was freed from his obligation to me.

Jay took us to a famous Steak house in Palm Beach. We had settled at our table when who did we spy but Arrogant Golfer Guy also dining there with his father and business manager.  AGG positively glared at me. He came to our table and  the golfers all shook hands, congratulating each other on a good tournament. He then turned to me, still glaring.

"I thought you DIDN'T?" he hissed quietly in a vague attempt at being discrete.

"I DON'T," I answered equally quiet. "Jay didn't make sex a requirement for dinner."

I don't think men normally huff and puff, but he actually did as he returned to his table. I guess you don't mess with some people's egos.

I told Jay what had just happened and why. I made his day. Seems he wasn't fond of AGG either.

Jay and I dated for a month or so. I had to admit it was cool to watch the man play golf on TV, then have him call as soon as the tournament was over. Because he was on tour, we didn't get much time together and he eventually met someone else who was willing to travel.

I enjoyed our time together but knew it would go no further with all the travel.   He sure was a delightful chapter though.

So yes, some famous people don't disappoint in the least.

  1. AGG was truly not a nice person, was it. Glad he got his ego adjusted.

    1. Jean R,
He really let fame go to his head. Some can handle it, he couldn't. I was grateful for the opportunity he gave me.

  2. You tell the most interesting and lively tales, Patti. And it's true that some people are just concerned with themselves and pay little attention to others. Love the story. I would have been tongue-tied by Perry Como too. :-)

Some do and then those like Perry stay decent. He really left me mute.

    1. Stephen,
I became a fan of his when he did the TV show in the 60's. He was Mr. Cool.

  4. I loved Perry Como and just knew he was as nice as he appeared to be on the screen. You proved my theory right! I still miss him and his smooth voice...now THAT is what I call singing.
And good for you for putting Mr. Arrogant in his place!

Actually I had time from the luncheon till the late dinner to think about what I would say if I had the chance. I was so glad he made it possible.

  6. Dear Patti, I've so enjoyed these memories you've share from your youth--from being tongue-tied (I certainly have been at times) to being assertive with AGG. You were then and you are now a certifiably mature woman who knows her worth. Peace.

    1. Dee,
Thank you. I guess we just respond to how we are treated. I really was grateful I got the chance to let AGG know I wasn't amused by his crudeness.

    1. Carolyn,
Luckily, I had the better part of the day to think of what I wanted to say to him. On the dance floor, I had nothing.

Perry really was one of the good guys, not just press. Several people I know who met him echo the same sentiments.

  13. I like the fact that some people definitely do not disappoint, Jay sounds like a stand up guy and you got to spend some fun times with him.

I am proud that you got to have your say with AGG, still ticks me off that he thought he could have his way with you simply due to his celebrity.

Sadly some people just can't handle fame. Jay was one who could.

  16. Most interesting posts. I always like Perry Como but didn't know much personal about him. My mom was a huge fan of his as well as Liberace...:)

  17. I'd always heard Como was a nice down-to-earth guy. Some celebs seem to build big egos to survive cause they're really overwhelmed with attention, then have to cope with those that want to use them. Probably helps if they have a good trusted support group to keep them grounded. But those attitudes exploiting women as you describe have been pretty prevalent -- AGG was grossly blatant & wonder how many drinks he had, or not.

  19. Stars or not they are just people and AGG makes me think of a few I have met along my journey of life. Great memories for you. I never did much dating but did get chances to meet up with celebs over the years.

  20. I just loved this post. I'm so happy to know that Perry Como is just as wonderful as I always thought he was. I even asked my daughter to make "And I Love You So" one of the songs played at her wedding. Sigh... You sure have met a lot of famous people.
