HIGH FIVE

I am flawed. Two things I can't do. I can't do the floss. Not my teeth, I am pretty good at that but the dance move everyone seems to be able to do. I can live with that lack but I have another failing that does bother me. I can't high five.

Looks simple doesn't it.
Having a trigger finger on my left hand thanks to a bout with my horse years ago so I can't use that hand.  I have a perfectly good right hand but it won't cooperate.

I miss the other person's hand completely, connect somewhere on their arm or only hit with the heel of my hand so there is no sound.  I think I have perfected the "whisper" high five.  I just need to make it a thing so I will be in.

I am envious of those who produce a smart slap to convey a celebratory salute.  I am totally envious of those who can do the "no look" high five.  How is that possible?

Who knows, maybe I am overthinking this but I feel a missed high five is worse than a limp handshake. When I hear the challenge, "high five" from a buddy, I cringe.

Are you good at the ole high five??  Can you floss?  Or do you even try to keep up?

    1. Djan,
Guess the floss isn't as popular as I thought, at least among seniors. Most people I know can high five--I am deficient.

  2. I do know the floss and my younger daughter does it brilliantly. I don't! I can high five but it never looks very impressive. :D

    1. Joey,
Had to smile at your not "looking impressive". That is pretty much how I feel. The young do seem to be able to floss and make it look easy.

  3. I can do the floss but until I read your blog and googled it, I didn't know that move had a name.

I don't think I've ever tried to do a high five. Just not my generation.

    1. Jean R,
Wow I am impressed you can floss. I think it must be great exercise. Oddly it is my generation that keeps egging me on to high five. Maybe it makes their day to see me try so awkwardly.

  4. My grandchildren taught me the high five. My sister's grandchildren (all much younger than mine) taught me the fist bump. I think the healthy thing now is to do an elbow bump. No idea what flossing is about. Will have to google.

    1. Annie,
Ask the grands about the floss. They probably know how.

  5. How funny. Never thought about not being able to high five. I don't know what the floss is either. Guess I'll have to ask the Grands!

I am pretty sure the grands can demonstrate. Don't know why I can't manage the simple maneuver of a high five. Maybe because I am so much shorter than most??

  6. My arthritis is in my left hand, which is so good when it comes to handshakes and high fives! And I can floss too, but really like the Piksters, little brushes that come from Australia and can be found on Amazon.

Well you just don't have any problems with current fads. Lucky you. The movements of the floss dance confuse me.

Ha ha, bet your 4 year old granddaughter can teach you to floss. Seems so easy for kids and looks like a good exercise to keep one limber.

  8. I don't even know what "the floss" is pertaining to dance. Yes I can high five but never do, I find it silly. :-)

I do too especially since I can't do it. I just have a group of seniors I lunch with that persist in doing it. I would like to learn to floss for it really looks like great exercise.

  9. I've never even heard of the floss dance until now. Wow, I am so out of it. LOL! I think I can high five, but I am not sure. The opportunity has not presented itself in quite some time. Mmm.

Well you can practice with roger if you feel the need. You never know when someone will throw down the challenge. Callie isn't much help for me.

  10. I guess I'm in good company in not knowing about the floss. And I find high fiving clumsy as well. But then I have very few situations where it's a thing anyway.

I would have thought those athletic grands of yours would have shown you how to floss. Looks like great exercise.

Good to see you here. Guess the commenting flaw has been fixed. I never had to high five till I moved here. These old gals seem to enjoy it.

  13. I found a great YouTube on doing the Floss. I am convinced we would all be better off if we did this dance for a few minutes every day. :~) As for the high five... well that's just not me! I love your creativeness in coming up with topics to write about!

I know, that is why I tried to learn it. It looks like great exercise. Should limber us up and work on our core.
Thanks, I was pretty much at the bottom of the barrel this week.

  14. I haven't a clue what the floss is and I have never high fived anyone and don't feel I have missed a thing. I must live a very sheltered life.

  15. I've only ever seen people high five in movies I watch and not often either. I've never heard of the floss, I'll have to go to you tube and see it.
There is NOTHING worse than a limp handshake.

Lucky you. I keep getting asked. I think they have bets on how badly I will do. They must enjoy watching me flail about:))

  16. You are way ahead of me...I had no idea what the floss dance move was! I'm pretty sure I couldn't do it either. As for high-fiving...I can't remember the last time I gave someone a high five so I'm not certain.

    How about a low five?

    1. Eileen,
Hum, a low five might work since I am so short. Let them struggle instead of me:) Thanks.

  17. Actually, in Hawaii people don’t seem to do the High Five much. They do the “Shaka” sign though. That when you make a fist and lift up just your thumb and baby finger.

I have seen that done but not much here in the Ozarks. At least there is no coordination involved.

  18. Well, sweet Patti I guess I am just an old fuddy duddy. I have never done the high-five. None of my family or friends are high-fivers...with me anyway. I have never heard of the Floss so I guess I don't do that either. I will have to Google it and see what it is. Hugs

The floss is fairly new but looks like a fun and good exercise which is why I tried it. Looks simple but too many moving parts for me.

  19. I must admit I do not like handshakes or high fives and try to avoid them whenever I can. I especially dislike it in church where I might be sitting next to someone who has been blowing his nose. I wish we would all move to the elbow greeting.

    1. Carolyn,
Well most of us have learned to sneeze into our elbow so perhaps we will learn to elbow bump. There is hope.

  20. Oh, I so understand. Hold it up and let them hit your hand. :) Or do a fist bump. That works well with my totally worn out hands.

  21. Dear Patti, I'm among those who don't even try to keep up. I think of it as "walking to the beat of a different drummer!" That's what helps me feel that "I"m okay; you're okay" that was so popular back in the 1980s.

As to high-fives, my shoulders keep me from doing that. And I have no idea what a dance floss is!!!!! I need to look that up on google. Things just pass me by while other things never occur to me!!!! I'm a slow learner! Peace.

Unless you are around people who delight in the high five, you shouldn't be tested. The floss looks like a good exercise as you just stand in one spot.
