Well crumb, how in the world did that happen? Everything was fine just a moment ago and then out of the blue, pain. Limb curling pain and for no obvious reason. Life just isn't fair.
Ok, it is not me that was hurting but my poor little dog Callie. I was taking her to the vet for her annual heart worm and parasite check. When she jumped out of the car at the vet's office, she pulled up a bit and started limping a little. Was she limping when she got in?? I wasn't aware she had been.
Well if you have to get hurt, best you are feet from the front door of the doctor's.
She passed all her parasite checks with flying colors but when he examined her leg, he said, " She has sprained her wrist."
I have had a ton of dogs in my care over the years but you know, I never realized they had wrists. It is that joint just south of their elbow. As he examined the joint a bit forcefully, she whined pitifully. This thing was really hurting her. When he finished manipulating it, she was really limping.
Now my last dog had two knee surgeries that costs thousands and required months of therapy. I was envisioning the same for Callie but Matt said surgery wasn't recommended for mild wrist sprains. While she probably had torn ligaments, they would heal on their own. He only suggested that since she was such a high energy dog, I should probably walk her on a leash for a few weeks.
Well I took my wounded baby home and lifted her onto the bed and pampered her. She pretty much ate it up. I got in a bit of core work myself lifting her off the bed, on to the couch and outside. The few times I let her walk, she limped obviously. I felt terrible.
I went on the computer and ordered her a wrist wrap to give her support while it healed even though the vet didn't recommend one.
I was going to make a video of her limping but the next day, it was a miracle. She was completely healed, not a trace of limp or tenderness. She is now in her 5th day of complete recovery and tearing around the property like a greyhound.
Was she faking it or maybe just didn't sprain it in the first place? Perhaps she just tweaked her wrist. I know I have tweaked my ankle before and a little rest or walking it off did the trick. Guess I will have a spare doggy wrist wrap on Tuesday. Can't hurt.
Regardless, she and I are hugely relieved, well me more than her for she had no idea of the diagnosis.
Ever have a health fear for you, your child or your pet just evaporate? Feels great doesn't it.
I didn't realise dogs had elbows or knees, let alone wrists! I'm glad the sprain didn't last.
ReplyDeleteJoey,
DeleteThank you. Don't feel badly, I know a lot about dogs and wrists were new to me also.
Glad that Callie recovered so quickly. Would that we humans could do the same.
ReplyDeletesmartcat,
DeleteMe too. We could save a lot of money and time if we could.
I didn't know dogs had elbows either. I'm glad Callie's problem was temporary but the support will he good to have around because it could happen again. Levi limps sometimes but its from Lyme Disease.
ReplyDeleteJean,
DeleteI did know about the elbows. Callie has the sharpest ones and they always dig into my leg when she crawls up on my lap.
I so feel for Levi's Lyme's Disease. I was surprised that dogs got it also.
I never heard of such a thing, but I sure am glad it didn't last long. And I'm just glad you don't have to use that wrist wrap on her. I have knee braces that I sometimes need but not always. :-)
ReplyDeleteDjan,
DeleteIt was new to me also but I don't feel badly about getting the wrap. I will have it just in case.
Maybe she just pinched a nerve rather that actually spraining? Or maybe she wanted to play a trip to the vet for all it was worth but then realized it wasn't worth curtailing her freedom? Dogs can be quite sneaky and you don't always know what is going on in their little heads!
ReplyDeleteOlga,
DeleteHa ha, I am not sure she wasn't playing me and maybe the vet to get one of the treats he offers.
Is there a one day IR for dogs?
ReplyDeletejoeh,
DeleteHa, ha, I was all set to bench her for 10 days but she insisted she was ready so I activated her the next day.
To be honest, animals can have pretty much the same ailments as people. I usually watch a limp for a day or so. Usually they heal themselves unless it is serious. As for myself, if I wait a week to 10 days and something isn't better, I call the doctor... BUT EVEN THEN generally I'M FINE the morning of the appointment.
ReplyDeleteRian,
DeleteI know, how many times has that happened? Too many. I was just lucky she got lame the day of her regular appointment.
Poor Callie, glad she's healed up so quickly. I found with my cats and injury tends to heal much more quickly than I would. Not sure if that's nature's way of protecting them when they were in the wild as they would more susceptible to predators in such a state.
ReplyDeleteI'm working an injury right now. I've done something to my back. This is now day 6 and I'm still complaining. Some days I wish I were a cat. :)
Eileen,
DeleteWe should heal so quickly. I am working on painful sciatica right now but instead of waiting and suffering like I have done before, I went right to my magic chiropractor who put me right last year. Hope you are better soon. I plan to be.
So glad Callie is okay. I wonder what she did that caused pain for a short while like that. Whatever it was, glad that it resolved so quickly. I always try to move carefully. My bones would not put up with a fall well at all.
ReplyDeleterobin,
DeleteMy vet thought that as active as she is that she may have stepped in a hole while chasing a bunny. Just glad it healed so quickly. Stay upright, I plan to also.
You've got me singing "Head, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes..." to my dogs and cats this morning.
ReplyDeleteAnnie,
DeleteOoh, I am sorry for the ear worm. Hope it leaves you soon. I hate them.
So glad the injury was not severe and that Callie seems to be doing just fine. Convenient to have the injury on the way TO the vet rather than on the way home.
ReplyDeleteCarolyn,
DeleteShe really did have splendid timing. Saved me an extra trip.
As I am reading this I was thinking, sprained wrist, wonder where that is? Then I was thinking, didn't the dr give her a wrap? Then you said you bought one. Boy we're on the same page. I am glad she miraculously healed. Who cares why, just glad she did.
ReplyDeletePeggy,
DeleteThank you. It was a head shaker but one of the best kind.

ReplyDeleteHmmm, I'm thinking she was milking it for a little extra TLC. Hey, who can blame her?
ReplyDeleteTom,
DeleteHa ha, I think you are right. She got off on being carried and babied but I guess by the second day, she was ready to run again.
I can't say that I have ever had a painful situation just disappear, unfortunately. Fortunate for you and your dog, though.
ReplyDeleteLinda,
DeleteIt didn't hurt my feelings at all that she was suddenly cured.
So glad Callie is OK.
ReplyDeleteInger,
DeleteThank you. We do worry about our pets don't we?
It does feel great. One of my girls was diagnosed with a heart murmur at age two and when she was next checked by a different doctor there was no sign of it. He said it had most likely been caused by the bronchitis she'd had.
ReplyDeleteRiver,
DeleteWow, that was an amazing difference. Heart murmur or bronchitis. You must have been terrified.
I was dog sitting my sister's two German Shepard's right after I got married. I had my wedding gifts in a corner, so I could open them neatly, right thank you cards and such as I went. One of them was a gift basket full of chocolates, coffee, etc. I actually am not sure exactly what was in that basket but I left them alone and they ate it. I thought we were going to the vet but they never even so much as passed gas from the incident.
ReplyDeleteSue,
ReplyDeleteWell that had to be scary but it does take a lot of chocolate and they were Shepards. Not even a little gas:))
Wow, poor Callie I am sure glad that was a quick fix and she is in no more pain. Chancy has a shoulder that pops out now and then. The first time it happened it scared me and I was getting ready to take him to the vet. For some reason I took his leg and began massaging and moving it in a circular motion....the shoulder popped back in place and he was fine. I have had to do that a couple of more times but now I don't get scared when he yells out and I see him holding up his leg and waiting on me to come fix it. Hugs to you and nose kisses for Callie hope she stays doing well. Nose kisses for Minnie too.
ReplyDeleteMaggie,
DeleteHow amazing that you learned to reset his shoulder. Bless his heart for now knowing you will make it better.
Never heard of a sprained wrist in a dog. Glad it wasn't more serious.
ReplyDeleteFun60
DeleteIt was new to me also. Always happy when simple works.
Yes, morale lifting it is. So glad it was a light sprain.
ReplyDeleteMage,
DeleteAfter what I went through with my last dog, this was a pure blessing.
I just HATEto have fur babies hurt!! It makes us feel so helpless. I am relieved that all is better!!
ReplyDeleteHootin Anni,
DeleteMe too. They just can't let us know how bad it is. Gotta learn to speak dog I guess.
☺ That'll work!
DeleteYes, that's happened to me twice that I thought I was so sick (and even thought about calling the rescue squad0 and then went to bed and woke up WELL. No rhyme or reason to it...
ReplyDeleteGinnie,
DeleteWow, that could have been awful and so glad it just disappeared. Hope it doesn't make you ignore something serious though.
Glad Callie is ok. Maybe it was like us humans hitting a funny bone- feels bad for awhile and then boom- like it never happened. :)
