BLEAH

Bleah, according to the Urban dictionary, means to express disinterest, tiredness, or overall feeling like crap. Pretty sure the last part is where it falls for me.

I am on the tail end of my annual creeping crud experience. I use to go years with out the first sniffle. Recent years it has become a regular event.  I now  get the regulation nasty cold with coughing, sneezing, wheezing and blowing.  With my puny lungs, this is not fun and a wee bit scary. But, I stayed out of the hospital this time and am actually recovering ahead of schedule. Whee.

I did learn something this time about my pets. I have written before how dogs are better listeners than cats. Still believe that and consider dogs to be more loyal than cats but the cats have way more compassion than dogs. At least mine does.

I am not a good patient. Therefore  there is a lot of grumbling along with the usual disgusting sounds.  The chest rattling coughs, the wheezing, constant blowing and plaintive "woe is me" moans are not things any creature wants to cuddle up with. Also my being even more cranky than usual due to lack of sleep can be off putting to the best of friends.

So I was not offended when as a distraction I reached out to pet Callie the dog while we shared the couch only to have her lean away from me in almost horror.  I had to smile as I imagined her thoughts.  'Hey, when was the last time you washed your hands? You do have hand sanitizer but I can tell by the smell, you have not used it. I'd appreciate it if you kept your crud to yourself thank you.'

Ok, I understood and  left my germaphobe alone as she claimed her corner of the couch, far from me.

I was really feeling punk though so I spread my feet, leaned forward and placed my elbows on my knees.  I used my hands to cradle my 30 pound heaver than normal head. I had to be the picture of abject misery.

Then I felt it.  The softest thing touched my cheek and patted it. I opened my eyes to find I was looking into Minnie (the cat's) eyes full of sympathy. Without a sound she had crawled between my feet, put one of her paws on the couch to raise herself up. Then with her free paw, she stretched to pat me on the cheek.  OK that touched me in so many ways.

Minnie has asthma and usually I will gently stroke her when she has an attack and it actually seems to help her and she calms right down. I can think of no other reason for her actions than to reciprocate what she knew to be healing.

I am much better now and hopefully dodged the pneumonia bullet from last year. Maybe it was the sweet compassion from my kitty that helped. Thanks Minnie.

Dogs listen, cats care. We do have a tie.

Your pet ever surprise you with an unusual, almost human gesture?

  1. We're now into year three of our first dog in married life. Before that we had about 40 years of cats. Howard, our grey tom (who used the toilet, believe it or not) used to stare into my eyes and pat my cheeks with his paws. In the next batch of cats, orange tom Calvin was right by my side for my first round of cancer.

    1. Marty,
I remember you talking about Howard. I tried for weeks to toilet train a cat but no go. That has to put the cat into the "perfect" category.

  2. I am so glad to learn that you are almost over another round of the crud. I get my flu shot annually and pray that I don't get sick, although I did get a cold awhile back. It wasn't too bad, but I hear you about al the coughing and sneezing. I don't have any pets but my dear husband comforts me when I'm sick. I love hearing how Minnie reached out to you.

Thank you. I am getting there. Hey having a live in sweet caregiver like Smart Guy is priceless. Even Minnie refuses to bring me soup:))

  3. Aw Patti, I'm very sorry you've been so under the weather... but I loved reading about Minnie's sweet gesture. I've been giving some thought lately to getting a cat (I grew up with several) and this tender tale put me one notch closer. Hope you get well real soon.

Thank you so much. Getting better. Think you ought to take the plunge and get a cat. They are really low maintenance pets and all I have had were very affectionate.

  4. Sorry you got the crud, but glad you are getting over it. Our Ellie was totally in tune with me and really knew when and how to comfort me. I miss her every single day.

Thank you and I am getting much better. Your dogs both set the bar high and most dogs do. Callie is the product of me just spoiling her rotten. She is very sweet and affectionate as long as I am able to reciprocate. Hum, that sounds almost cat like:))

  5. Sorry you've been feeling bad. This time of the year we all seem to pass the crud around. I haven't lived with a cat for years but I know my mom's cat was always by her side when she was ill. I've had a few dogs who would do the same but Levi, my current dog is like your Callie. I can almost hear him in my head saying, "I know you're about to die but get me some fresh water before you go."

    1. Jean,
Thanks so much. That's funny. I think this post made me realize that I am part of the problem. I have spoiled my dog into becoming a receiver instead of a giver. Could that be Levi's problem also?

  6. I find that both cats and dogs vary in their individual characters as much as humans do. Some are more understanding (or selfish) than others. Here's how I ward off a cold/virus, Patti. I raise my temperature by sipping a hot toddy (made with lemon/honey/cinnamon/rum) followed by an asprin or two while rugged up. When I get too warm, I let myself just sweat. Works like a charm by frying those darned germs. Oh, and cat friend really does seem to sympathize which I do appreciate!

I am starting to realize that I may have been part of the problem with Callie. I have spoiled her rotten so she might have become selfish. She is not a giver.
I remember those hot toddies from when I was a kid. My Mom made them for us. The good thing is that we didn't care so much about being sick. I can't do alcohol so I may have to try a virgin version. Thanks.

  7. You do have a sweet kitty cat there, a very compassionate furry friend. The way Callie reacted makes me wonder if maybe her very sharp sense of smell could detect something viral and it scared her. A little survival mechanism? Glad you are on the road to full recovery. Stay healthy there, dear friend.

Thank you, feeling great is around the corner. "Scaring her" made me think. It has been static electricity time around here and I could have given her a mild jolt when I touched her. I would like to think that over just indifference.

  8. Aww, sweet Minnie! I know that when I'm not feeling well and am laid up in bed, they will come and curl up with me. But I think part of that is the fever, they like the warmth. :)
Glad that you're getting close to the end of it.

Thank you, I am ready for some coughless days. The good thing is that I didn't have a fever with this so I knew it wasn't serious. They are great snugglers aren't they?

  9. Always! After my knee surgery my dog wouldn't leave my side. When I feel sad or if I cry, she won't leave my side. She gets affectionate. I don't like cats so I don't have one but you are the first person I have ever heard with a cat who says such nice warm things a cat was doing. I always hear the opposite even though they love their cats. Good to know. :-) Pets are awesome in any body and good for our health. Hope you are feeling better soon Patti

Thank you, I am getting there. So glad Lizzy was your rock. Sure makes a difference doesn't it? Cats often get bad raps about being aloof and only around when they want something. Every one I have had were almost annoyingly affectionate. Minnie is glued to me whenever I stop moving and sit.

  10. So sorry to hear you had the crud again sweet Patti but happy to know you are better. What a sweet and heart touching post. Dogs and cats are amazing. One of my sons came to see me awhile back to share with me a heartbreaking experience he was gong through. As he was sharing with me he began to cry, Chancy walked over to him and laid his head on my son's knee. That brought tears to me so we both were crying. Keep getting better and be well soon sweet friend. Hugs for you and nose kisses for Callie and Minnie.

Thanks for posting the picture of Chancy recently. I have needed a Chancy fix.

    3. By the way, I’m in Maryland right now visiting with my son’s family. After that we’ll head to Illinois before returning home. My brother is staying with my mother now which is great. I haven’t been able to blog since leaving Hawaii, but I scheduled posts ahead of time.

Thank you so much for visiting. I see you’re taking a little hiatus too. I’ll be taking one when I get back to Hawaii.

And yes, I’ve spent much more time talking to Mungo. He’s 12 years old now and looks at me soulfully when I talk to him, but he doesn’t have that get-up-and-go anymore.

  17. My good friend has 2 Siamese kitties and they always take good care of her if she isn't feeling well.
My little Fuzzy Pomeranian worries about me any time I have a health problem. When my blood sugar gets too high, or if I take steroids or antibiotic he sniffs my legs and if I have on a nightgown or shorts he will lick my leg to try and learn what is different. I have never encouraged him to lick my legs, I don't really like dog licks.

He is 15 years old and is totally deaf. If I watch a sad movie or if something makes me start crying,he is up and at my side immediately. This has even happened when he was in a different room than I was. I used to think he came because he heard me crying, but now he still checks me on me if even tears come to my eyes. I think he can smell my tears.
Our sweet cats and dogs really are treasures. Aren't they.

Your little Pom sounds like a pure winner. It is amazing what dogs can sense with their noses. That's why they make great service animals. Keep him warm and close.

  21. I had Angel when I had my first and only bout of flu several years ago and every time I wobbled or crawled my way to the bathroom for throwing up, Angel would come along and make sure I got back to bed safely and then lie beside me instead of on my ribs. Lola has only been with me two and a half years, but has learned that when I need to pee it's usually 'right now' and she'll get off the end of the recliner so I can go.
