MIRACLE ??

In my post about giving God an easy prayer to answer I wrote about my request to the Almighty that I do NOT EVER want to win the big prize in the Lotto drawings. I believe those huge prizes bring nothing but angst.  However a smaller prize would be just fine. So I enter but I hope for small winnings and pray I don't get the big one..  So far He has answered that prayer 100% of the time:)

I have recently had computer problems and my "computer guy" is in the process of moving so he couldn't even look at it for over a week. Oh the horrors of withdrawal. So I dug in and tackled it myself.

Most of you know how that can easily push one off the edge of sanity. We try one thing and it removes another. We dig and dig to find access to the tools we need. Then find out they don't work or we made it worse. For 4 days I struggled with this beast with my limited knowledge.  There was no "eureka" moment.  I did marginally fixed my email early on but then I no longer could access my search engine and blogger stayed hidden.

Finally I used "restore" twice till I got to a time where I could at least open Internet Explorer, my old search engine.  It barely worked but it did give me some functions if a bit primitive. I was able to read your posts and publish your comments. It was not fun nor smooth but it worked.

I practiced insanity by repeatedly banging on the Google Chrome button on my taskbar after each attempt. I kept expecting a new result, but nothing. Sleep gave  me no relief. I had actual nightmares about working on it so this was a 24/4 aggravation.  Finally on the 4th evening I had exhausted everything I knew to do and after my hundredth unsuccessful reboot, I threw up my hands and said, "Lord, how about you give it a try?"  I then shut it down and went to sleep, nightmare free.

When I awoke, it appeared to still be my crippled computer. Just to prove I was insane, I once more hit Google Chrome and wow, it came to life clear as ever. It was like the previous 4 days hadn't happened. Everything worked as it had before. I could finally delete Internet Explorer and breathe.

So was it a miracle?  Did the Big Guy zap my computer back to life? I'm thinking the original problem was caused by Microsoft. They sent my Windows 7 a very long install two days after they washed its hands forever of my operating system.  Perhaps Windows realized the problem and snuck in a corrective patch without my knowledge?

I'd rather believe God needed an easy cure and fixed it for me even though I'm sure he has way more important things to work on. Who knows?  I thanked Him profusely---just-in-case.

Ever have your computer drive you crazy then suddenly heal itself over night?

  1. Google is a pain. For days it wouldn't load (on my phone) & I couldn't search. Some days Blogger wouldn't cooperate at all. It was a long weekend. So far, blogger is opening, but Google search engine still "sucks".

Whatever got your computer working...praise be.

Oh no, so sorry you are still having troubles. I know how frustrating it can be. Right now Chrome is working perfectly for me and I am sleeping nightmare free. Hope you get there.

  2. Don't want to appear snotty, Patti, but Apple McIntosh is the only brand I buy. They rarely give any grief. Perhaps it's time you crossed the electronics aisle. Just say'n.

I was thinking Apple while this happened but of course couldn't Google for deals. Right now all is working perfectly but if it happens again, I may just venture from the dark side.

  3. I am also an Apple fan and when I had to use I/E at work (many years ago), I absolutely hated its propensity to just freeze up! Congratulations on your happy fix, whatever it was. Thanks be to God. :-)

I am giving the big guy the credit. If this comes up again, I may just have to switch to Apple. The price scares me but the piece of mind would be worth it.

  4. I've been there too, Patti. You have a better idea of how to fit things than I do. With me, it's usually my printer that gives me fits.

I do a lot of experimenting. Understand about the printer. I haven't had one for a long time for that reason. I miss it.

  5. 2 things here - have I ever had a computer drive me crazy? Always and technology is a necessary evil to me.
    2. Who the hell wouldn't want at least 12 million Patti? Are you nuts? To be able to exhale and not worry about everything as I do. I'll take my chances and if angst should happen, and trust me it wouldn't, I'll let you know. If you win 12 you only end up with 3 million and I would not have a bit of angst. I would also do it in private. No public info going out to the world. I don't know why people do that. And if I would win 100 million I do not think there could possibly be angst. Just the ability to exhale and relax for the few years left.

    1. Margaret,
Oh, I could handle 12 million, it is the half billion ones that scare me into prayer. Tell you what. If I win one of the several hundred million ones, I'll give you the ticket if you promise to give me one million tax free. That would be perfect. Deal??

    2. I'd love to win a big one. After being divided up by all family members, we'd each have enough to live comfortably without mortgages and no worries about bills.

  7. Google Chrome has been working great for me. Safari on my iPad was just awful and I couldn’t write on my blog using it. Once I started using Chrome, I could do everything I needed to on my blog. I gave up on my MacBook Air. My old, tired brain is too used to using Windows and just couldn’t adapt. Sigh... Luckily, if my PC gives me trouble, I do have techies in the family who fix it right away.

  8. Patti, you are NOT alone; a month or so ago, I got one of those big Windows Update installs, like 500MB. Like you, I also use Windows 7 & know support ended for it this past January. Anyway, I let it "update" and soon after, had trouble with my browser (I use Firefox), even opening files on my hard drive. Nothing seemed to work--I ran a couple antivirus tools (Malwarebytes & Identity Shield), ran CCleaner, all to no avail. Wound up doing just what you did, a couple system restores to 2-3 months previous. This DID right things. And now my "Windows Updater" is slowly, day by day, giving me updates to make--I suspect the same old stuff from before, we shall see. PS. I want to kick myself, a couple years ago Windows offered me a free upgrade to Windows 10, I declined as I was pretty comfortable with Win7. Did you get that free upgrade offer too? Sorry for the long ramble, hang in there!

    1. Doug,
So sorry you went through the same mess. I too am blaming that massive update. Sorry you went through it but relieved to know I wasn't alone.
Yes, I did do the free upgrade and really didn't like Windows 10 so I uninstalled it. My printer and scanner did not work with it and I got really ticked when they wanted me to pay for solitaire. Come on. I guess 10 has had a lot of problems also since installation. I'll keep hanging on to Windows 7 for now. Good luck to us both.

    2. I took the free upgrade to 10 about six months after they started offering it, as soon as my daughter had sorted it all on her computer so she could talk me through the "how to's" of using it. I've had no trouble with it.

    3. @ApacheDug, because you restored to three months previous, you invalidated the big update, that's why you are now getting it all again in bits and pieces.

  12. Oh definitely! I purposefully hand various devices over to the healing tech fairies or cyber spirits or whatever and leave them alone for a day or two. It actually works quite often. Whenever I have tried everything and rebooted and all the rest...I shut it off and hand it over and tell them to do their thing with it. No lie. Dagan and Leah are used to me doing things like this--LOL! ;)

  16. I do know that just shutting the thing down can cure any number of ills.
We lost Internet this weekend, and finally got someone to talk to from Concast. The result was a new modem. Then we had to make it talk to our Comcast land line phones. I assigned Tom to take care of it this time and tried to let him be until it was all straightened out. It is.

  17. I've had ongoing problems with my wireless printer and the only thing that works is to unplug it overnight and it resets itself. I will never get another wireless. I love printing from another room, but the unit goes to sleep if I haven't printed for a certain while. Then I have to physically go to the printer and tap on the display to wake it up.

  18. I believe it is probably Microsoft related since Windows 7 is now obsolete or close to it and support platforms are no longer available for it as far as I know, so maybe a "repair patch" is what got you running again. I had Google Chrome once for almost two days and switched back to regular google with a huge sigh of relief years ago now. Maybe it's better now, but I'm not risking my sanity to find out.

  19. River,

  21. Well of course I have had many issues as Safari/Apple and Google are always trying to speed up and upgrade the two stop being easy to use. Take commenting. It took me several months to solve as I was able to do some but others failed to send. It was a new setting in Safari that created it and was related to a thing called third party provider blocks. Well now I have that done but still struggle posting recent picksfrom my Apple device directly. Blogger seems to be okay with google pics but I don’t need that service.

So sorry Safari is giving you troubles but it is a bit of relief for me. Here I thought all my problems would go away if I just paid the greater price for Apple. Guess there is no frustration proof system.

  22. I have one thing that drives me crazy. I have the #10 version and they are constantly bringing up new additions. I can always tell because my mouse stops working … I lose the little arrow and can't do anything. I've found if I force it to close by pushing the little button and then when it goes black I push the button again and slowly it comes back on but of course I've lost all I was working on … but at least I get my arrow back and start anew !! I can't understand why they can't make changes in the dead of night ...

I had heard that Windows 10 wasn't frustration free. I didn't like it when I upgraded and as a result uninstalled the program. Sometimes I regretted it but I guess it has its problems also.

  23. I haven't had a bad shutdown in a while but I so sympathize with what you went through. My old laptop (as opposed to my newish Chromebook) is being pulled into the future with the new uploads. I do not like my Chromebook and should just get as far away from Google as I can, but you have to work with what you have.

  24. Yes, more or less, with a correction finally materializing days later after I had finally thrown up my hands in frustration and stopped using the blankety blank device. I concluded maybe it just needed some time to itself to "heal". I'm not convinced God is tech savvy, but who knows. Maybe he/she uses these occasions to test us.

I haven't attempted to save my old laptop with Windows 7 as keep putting off trying to see if I can upgrade it. That computer is already old, slow just as is my internet connection so envision it will be a nightmare to undertake, but I would like to be able to safely go out on the internet with it. I don't like and rarely use Safari on the MAC my son finally convinced me to get several years ago. Had mostly used Firefox instead of Google in the past on that other laptop.

I wonder if I'll even be able to salvage being able to safely use my old laptop?

You may have a good point. I know my confused mind probably sent many confused signals to my laptop while working on it. Maybe it just needed me to leave it the heck alone for a while. I am sticking with my Windows 7 for a while anyway. I guess there are still XP systems out there still working OK.

  25. I've never been that lucky to have a surprise fix. Right now I am contemplating what is going to happen after HP posted a pop up saying my computer is near the end of it's life. It's like a doomsday warning. It's not that I wouldn't like to have a new computer, it's that I don't want to losr all of my photos and files that I have on this one!
    Have a great weekend!
