JUST DESERTS

Hum, here all this time I thought it was "just desserts" but according to Webster, "deserts" actually refers to what someone deserves. I have been schooled.

My regular readers know I love baseball and some even know I spend time people  watching the stands during games.  Those of you who have games with good attendance would find such a side sport almost impossible.  But my team is the Miami Marlins and we have often laughable attendance.  Thus the individuals stand out in the empty seats. Also there is a lot of downtime in baseball and I have yet learned how to knit.

I wrote about a couple in 2019 that brought drama to the game. They had been to every home game in the same seats and seemed a sweet couple but I saw them break up right before my eyes. The whole story is here. By the way, they never came back.

This year however I had a different couple to watch.  The man was a nice looking fellow in his mid 60's who always secured the same 3 seats behind home place.  He would sit in the middle, his wife?(guessing here) who was a nice looking hispanic woman sat to his right. Then for half a year, the man to his left was a Seminole Indian about his same age.

They always arrived in the 3rd inning, never for the start of the game no matter if it were a day or night game. The man and his Indian friend spent the whole game talking. I mean constant. They never saw a play on the field. The wife stared out at the field and clapped when appropriate but was never acknowledged by either man.  I felt badly for her.  I didn't find this interesting as much as aggravating and sad but I kept watching off and on.

Last month the Seminole  quit showing up and the man has since brought a variety of different men to the game.  The friends may have changed but the intent didn't.  He continued to talk non-stop to the new friend and ignore both the game and the wife.  If no one showed up for a while, he would talk to her but then would ignore her as soon as his friend would arrive . These are not cheap seats so I figure the man must have a few bucks.

Today we lost the game--not really something new for the Marlins--but I am smiling big time and delighted. The worm turned and just deserts were served steaming hot.

Today he showed up with a different man and they chatted--ignoring the game per usual. Then the wife showed up a little later and took a seat beside the new friend. I was astounded at what happened next but I loved every minute of it. The friend turned his back to the man and talked solely to the wife. They laughed a lot and had very animated conversations for the final 6 innings.

The man glowered as he was being ignored. He studied his phone and I could almost see the steam coming out his ears. He left and came back several times only to be ignored again by the pair.  When the game ended, the camera left the stands so I don't know the end of the story but I loved what I saw today.

I just had to tell someone that "just deserts" was served today in Miami. Thank you for listening.

You ever get fascinated watching strangers interact?

  1. There was one game that while watching it went into extra innings! Many many extra innings. It was a night game. The stands emptied out over time except for a few die-hards. Even the commentators in the TV booth we're bored. The camera panned out, showing the stands and one guy was sitting alone....very long beard. Eventually the commentator said "this guy was clean shaven at the 1st inning."

By that time, it was coming up to one a.m. and I was so giddy I never laughed so hard. That was the one time I watched fans.

Oh and I was always watching Pres. Bush & Barbara behind home plate at the Houston home games.

Ha ha, that was laugh out loud funny. Love quick wit.
Barbara Bush was my favorite first lady of all time.

  2. Patti, this was too funny--Hootin Anni's comment with the bearded man made me laugh too! Darn it, I've never been a tv baseball fan but it sounds like I've been missing some good stuff. I better start showing some love to the Pirates :^)

    1. Doug,
I know, Anni's comment made me laugh too. If the Pirates have good attendance at their games, it would be hard to catch the shenanigans going on in the stands. You need lots of vacant seats like the Marlins have.

  3. I don't watch baseball, but what you watched sounds way more interesting than the game itself. Interesting observation. Now I'll be waiting for a follow-up story.

I wish we had a game today but we have the day off. I will definitely be watching our next home game though it won't be till the 2nd.

  4. I must admit I've noticed people behind the plate, but never paid any attention to their interactions with others. What I do notice are those who spend (what appears to me) their entire time on their darned phones. Seriously, if I paid good money to attend a game I'd be paying a lot more attention to the game.
It's getting down to crunch time for my team. Fingers crossed they get the wild card spot this season.

    1. Eileen,
Well the Jays have given you a great year and looks to me like they will be going on.
Me too on those phone hoggers. Why do they even go to the games?

  5. Man, sounds like a soap opera. The intrigue behind it all. I like drama as long as it doesn't affect me personally.

Well a lot of the drama comes from my imagination but it is fun and harmless.

  6. Well spotted, Patti! Like New Robin 13, I'll be interested in a follow-up to that real life soap. I sometimes like to just sit for a little while in my car in a shopping center's parking lot and watch people going about their businesses. In particular, their posture and what they are wearing these days.

Ah, another people watcher. The good thing is that it is free, keeps us from being bored and we can let our imaginations run free. Keep it going.

  7. I do love people watching although I've never had the opportunity to do it at a sporting event. However, I am an avid spy at the supermarket and at restaurants or coffee shops!

I know, people are the best reality show around and no commercials. Plus it gives our imagination a workout.

  8. oh I love this! I would have done the same exact thing if I could. Do you ever watch mlb central at 9am eastern on mlb channel? The stuff they highlight (they call them ham and eggers) that go on in the stands is always fun and funny and sometimes pathetic like your man ignoring his female friend. I love that he got his 'desserts!:

I haven't watched that yet but I will. That ham and eggers sounds fun.
Yes it was a good day today even though we lost.

  9. We do our people watching at restaurants. Mrs C does a commentary on couples relationships. We generally eat before 6, around business quitting time, Mrs. C figures most younger couples are out after work cheating on their spouse. She's probably right most times, either way her scenarios are always entertaining.

Ooh, Mrs. C sounds really entertaining. She would be fun to go to dinner with and she may be right about the cheating.

  11. Maybe the couple worked together during the day and spent so much time together that that's why they ignored each other at the games? Nope, I don't believe it either. LOL

Ha ha, nice try to put a good spin on it but it went on for over half a season. Think he was just a jerk.

  12. I always thought it was "desserts" too and now I feel stupid for correcting people unnecessarily. I don't observe strangers much, my attention is fleeting and I am at home most of the time anyway.

  13. Sadly I am not a sports fan but I am a people watcher and would always wonder about the couple that broke up in front of all the fans.

  14. Anni,
That first couple hasn't been spotted since that episode in 2019. Either they really split up or got different season tickets and sit in another section. It was sad.
