ON A ROLL

I have posted about this before but even though I know it is true, I still get surprised when in happens. Bad things come in threes but so do good things which was once again proven to me.

#1.  Don't know if I mentioned that I was having some tummy problems. Food turned to gas which makes mixing in polite society a struggle. Mostly burping but a little of the stuff sometimes escaped from another orifice. TMI (too much information) ?? I would get relief in minutes by chewing on a small piece of candied ginger. Amazing stuff.

When I was consulting the Net, ginger tea was highly touted so I gave it a try. Wow, one cup in the morning and I was good for the whole day.  I am not a doctor but if you have similar problems, give it a shot.  Though be warned that it is a blood thinner so if you are on those, you might need to make  adjustments to your meds. Check with your doctor. That was Monday.

#2     Wednesday I was going to town to pick up a prescription when my little truck hesitated, then two lights lit up on my dash.  ABS (brakes)  lit up and the image of a battery did at the same time. I was driving past my mechanic so I pulled in. He popped my hood and said my alternator belt was shredded. He knows my little Toyota is almost 20 years old and said I would need all three belts.

Oh joy, fat chance this was a quick fix but I did say a string of good things happened. He made a call and within 10 minutes, my three replacement belts arrived. I know people with brand new cars waiting weeks for parts.  He put his mechanic right on it and in 30 minutes, I was good to go--if a bit lighter in the wallet.

I was so impressed. This could have happened when I was heading for another town and I could have been stranded on a remote, two lane hill country road.

#3   I was really feeling blessed and thought if I heard about this from someone else, I'd suggest they should buy a lotto ticket while their luck was hot. So taking my own advice, on the way home I stopped in to get a scratch off ticket just for fun.

I was delighted to learn the ticket made me $50 richer. Ok that is not a billion, a million or even a thousand but it really made my day. Fifty bucks--woo hoo. That took some of the sting out of the belt replacement.

I would like to say the good things kept on rolling in but that was it. Still that made my week.

I am a big believer in the three good things for I had a similar day recently. Think I am on a roll.

Do you believe it is not only bad things that come in threes but good things also?

  1. Patti, I'm always impressed when you talk about your truck. I don't know why that is, I guess my old-fashioned thinking. Anyway that is such great news about the quick repairs and $50 is not exactly chump change! And without sharing too much, the ginger tea suggestion is a very good one, thank you. I love the notion of good things coming in threes.. you certainly proved that here. 🙂👍

Ha ha, does it help if your know my truck is small and cute??
The tea should probably not be taken if you are on meds though it is supposed to be good for high blood pressure. Check with your doc.

  2. Yes, I believe in that old adage, too, that good (or bad) things come in threes. Your luck with the truck is wonderful, I mean like perfect! And I'll remember that about the ginger tea. I love ginger in any form. :-)

    1. Djan,
Have you tried the candied ginger? I like it though it is a bit hot. Ginger has been used for years for upset stomachs and will settle a queasy one.
I did really get lucky with the truck.

  3. Well, you make a good case for the rule of threes! I also suspect our angels ride in cars with us -- how can it be coincidence that a car breaks down in front of a trusted mechanic?

When I think of all the bad places it could have given me trouble with the narrow roads and poor cell service, I truly was fortunate it was less than a mile from my mechanic.

  4. Your truck fascinates me too. Belts are an easy fix and when one goes it's best to replace them all. You are so lucky to have a mechanic you trust and how nice to have the lotto win to offset the cost of the repairs.

The rule of three does seem more fact than fiction, doesn't it.

Hey, I'm a believer. I was really impressed he could find them for a 20 year old vehicle so quickly here in tiny town.

  5. I only ever heard people die in threes, not good or bad things. I'll be on the lookout from now on. Hope you stay on the good luck train! Thanks for sharing such a happy post, always makes me feel good.

  7. Things definitely happen in threes and I sure prefer the good ones.
Having your vehicle misbehave right in front of your mechanics was a real stroke of luck and winning $50 was good timing too.

I was definitely on a roll. Like you I know bad things do that too and I always hope they are a one and done.
Oddly the lotto ticket place was across the street from my mechanic. Meant to be.

  8. I love your three good things story. If your car has to misbehave what better place than right there in front of your mechanics. Makes me want to start counting when good or bad things start rolling. I haven't done that in years.

    1. Robin,
Oh it could have been so much worse. I have Dr appointments in a town 40 miles away through hills, two lane roads with no shoulders. I am counting my blessings. Also I think if you start counting, the extra ones will come along.

    2. You don't have a doctor closer than that? What do you do in emergencies?

    3. River,
We do have a hospital for emergencies. This is a small town so any specialists are in neighboring towns. My Primary Care is local.

  9. Haha. Wish I could buy a lottery ticket but gambling is illegal in Hawaii. Man, I would love to win $50. Good for you to have 3 good things happening in 1 week.

Aww sorry no lotto in Hawaii. Arkansas was like that when I got here but they finally gave in. I don't play a lot but like the fun of it once and a while.

  10. Hm-m-m, I wonder if ginger cookies also help with digestion. Glad you got your truck back in good health, Patti. Had a fan belt replaced on my old Toyota just a few months ago. Good and bad events can come in threes. For me, more often in ones or twos.

Don't know why not. Probably not as effective but I am sure they would help. I love ginger snaps.
'Interesting how easy it is to get parts for our old Toyotas while people with new cars wait weeks.

  11. always knew about the bad things or deaths in 3s but never the good. The last really good luck I had was in 1987 and I met this guy named Rick. The 2nd is that he is still with me.

  12. I don't recall good things in threes. But then again, I always remember the BAD things!! My nature I guess.

    I've only won $2

  13. Those are very positive things! I've heard that ginger is great for seasickness but not for other tummy issues. Good to know! My older daughter has been waiting since early July for their car to be fixed from an accident in Montana. It's feeling like they'll never get the car back. In the meantime, they're paying for a rental car and the accident wasn't even their fault. Grrr!!

I was thinking of the mess OD has been in with that car when I said how shocked I was that he could fix mine so quickly. I sure hope her problem gets straightened out and SOON.

I told my PC about my success with ginger and he got really excited. Might have made him a believer.
Yes, my mechanic is a real find.

  15. I never thought about it, but I believe it now. For those who can't take ginger or ginger tea, peppermint tea has the same effect when taken after a meal. But you should look into why your food was suddenly causing problems, there may be something going on that needs fixing.
Great that you were able to get your car fixed right away and even better that you made $50 on that scratcher.

    1. River,
Actually it was the peppermint that was giving me problems. I ate Peppermint Patties pretty much for years after my big meal and they recently turned on me. I am in the process now of seeing doctors to find out the cause.
That scratcher was a fun win.

  16. Yep, you can even buy ginger capsules in the supplements section. My OB Dad used to suggest peppermint candy for his queezy pregnant patients. That's a magic truck, with lots of luck around you! Linda in Kansas

  18. Wow your mechanic was good, to get 3 parts in so quickly! We have been waiting a year and a half to get some step bars for our Wrangler jeep. Okay not life threatening but without them it makes getting and out of the car harder. I haven't noticed that good things come in 3's too.

Wow, I am so sorry about the horrific wait you have experienced with your Jeep. It was stories like that I hear so often that made my fix in minutes seem so unreal.

  19. I used to carry ginger capsules with me when I traveled. Long ago, I went into an airport bathroom and encountered a group of Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. One was complaining about stomach issues, so I told her about ginger and gave her a few capsules to try. Unfortunately, Bob wasn't with me in the Ladies bathroom - I'm sure that would be one of his favorite memories. I think you wrote about this gem of a mechanic previously - he is definitely a VERY good thing.

Yes I have written a few posts about this mechanic. He has been a trusted lifesaver.

  20. I bring candied ginger on travels to help with any nausea. I don't know if it helps, but I like the taste. Ginger tea? Really? Hmmmm... because I do have gas that goes out of that other orifice. Sigh... I need to get some of that.

  21. Kay,
I carry tins of candied ginger with me everywhere. Usually just a small bite will set me right. Usually just having it available is all I need and don't need to take it. Good stuff.

  22. For stomach issues and also heart burn, one tbl spoon of baking soda in a shot or two of water, hold your nose, throw it down, wait 7 seconds for a belch or two and you are like new.
