WORDLE

I know Wordle is not new to many of you. I did recently learn that Wordle was the most Google searched term for 2022. Interesting. It was my blog buddy mentions (Kay for one) that got me interested. The fact that it could be addictive scared me a bit for I do have an addictive personality.  Still, how could a word game make me seek out a 12 step program? Beware.

Wordle is a word game that is offered daily by the NY Times.  It is free, so far I haven't gotten any spam as a result and yep, I am addicted.

You are given 6 tries to guess what the 5 letter word of the day is. They are  common words.

These are the simple rules.

You have to guess the Wordle in six tries or less.
A correct letter in the right place turns green.
A correct letter in the wrong place turns yellow
An incorrect letter turns gray.
Letters can be used more than once
Answers are never plurals

It helps to have a good starter word with lots of vowels. I use "tried" and "pious." After I enter those two words, I get an idea of what I am looking for. I usually get it in the 3rd or 4th  tries but I went all the way to 6 guesses once. Luckily, I have always eventually gotten the word each day. Ahh.

What amazes me is my reaction to a quick win. I should be pleased but I don't like it. I like having to ponder and guess.

Curious, if you play are you more pleased with a quick solve or do you enjoy the challenge of  struggling a bit?

Since I won't post again till after Christmas, I just want to wish you all the very best day. May it be filled with good health, warmth, caring, hugs and smiles. Make it a good day.

  1. I don't believe it. After all this talk this past year in the Blogverse about Wordle, someone finally explained what it was in a clear, concise manner! I'm just glad it was you Patti. I'm curious now to check it out for the first time since reading about it. Patti, at the risk of sounding like a groupie, just wanted to use this opportunity to let you know how much I enjoy your thoughts not just here, but on other blogs too. You always seem to have just the right things to say. If we don't talk before then, I sure hope you have a wonderful Christmas. 🙂♥️🎄

Aww thanks and you ALWAYS leave the sweetest comments. My post isn't complete till I hear from Doug.
Think you will enjoy Wordle and the price is right. I do it first think in the morning to get my mind cranking.

  3. It's the first thing I do when I wake up. A bit like waking the brain for the day. Have you tried 'quordle'? If you want to exercise the brain cells a bit more then give it a try.

Thanks, as soon as I finish answering comments I will go search for quordle. My brain cells can use the work out.

  4. Try 247 wordley, very much like wordle with opportunity for practice. I like word games - scrabble, scattegories.

Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. After I finish here I will check out 247 wordley. Usually when I finish Wordle quickly, I kind of want more. Now I have 2 new places to look.

  5. I haven't tried it. With my dyslectic I don't think I'd ever get the words spelled right. I agree that of all the directions I've read this year, yours is the clearest. Makes me want to try, even went to the site once a month go but didn't like that I had to sign up with an account. Good to know they don't send out spam in case I try again.

You don't have to sign up. That is if you want to interact with others and trade scores. They ask me periodically if I want to sign up but I just decline and keep playing.

  6. Thank you so much for explaining Wordle. All my family plays and I have tried to stay away because they are truly addicted. How would you play that in the NY Times? I guess you mean the online edition. I am already addicted to Woodoku. Happy Holidays to you Patti. See you after the New Year.

It is just a website and you don't have to log in. I know you are taking a break and we will see you in 2023. Have a wonderful break and holidays.

  7. Oh yes, I am addicted to Wordle. My sister and I send each other emails about it everyday. Sometimes it is so hard it drives me crazy, and I ask my sister for a clue if she's already gotten the word. I never knew I would be a cheater, but there you have it! LOL!
I like your first two words. Mine are HOUSE and TRAIN. I may try yours next.
    Merry Merry Christmas, Patti!

    1. Robin,
Ha ha, I may try yours next as they get the same number of vowels and a different consonant with the H and N that seems to come up a lot.
You and Roger have a wonderful holidays.

  9. I also didn't realize there are never plural words. I've been playing off and on for some time and I've been baffled more than once. I hate the words that start with vowels. :p
My starting words are ratio and clean. I tend to try to solve it quickly (which is properly why I end up missing some words).

    1. Eileen,
Remember recently there was a word with none of the regular vowels and only Y to help? That one was a brute. I am disappointed when it goes quickly.

  10. I'm very addictive, but since you can only do Wordle once a day, it's no problem for me. I know there are other sites where you could play all day if you like, but I'm only interested in the real thing, the one all my friends are playing. Once I started using the "hard mode", I have gotten every word by the sixth try. The hard mode actually makes it easier. I used different words all the time; I find it more fun that way.

    1. Donna,
Not aware of hard mode. I would imagine you have to sign up to use that. I will check it out but so far am enjoying the regular mode. Different starter words might be fun but mine have worked really well so far.

  11. Guesses at 2 and sometimes 3 are just lucky ones; they don't feel earned. Is that what you think too? I do wordle in English and in French and use the same start word for both "adieu." :) I also play worldle, statele and statle. (geography games)

    1. Margaret,
I just hate that the game is over so soon and I like to be challenged. Wow, you play it in French. Impressive.

  12. Yes, we wordle. DH and I play daily. He does it early and I get to it sometime during the day. He usually greets me with "Got it in 3!" And my started words are audio and scent.

    1. Rian,
I like your starter words and may replace pious with audio so I can get that "a" vowel. It is fun isn't it?

  13. I play Wordle late in the afternoon when I take a sit down break before starting dinner. While I like a quick solve, yes, I am also let down. Now what. I have to fine something else to occupy me while I take my break.

  15. I liked Wordle, then got bored with it. Did you know there's also Dordle (2 games), Quordle (4), Octordle (8) and Sedecordle (16 simultaneous games)? I was doing all of them, then found Squaredle and switched to that. For anyone who has ever played Boggle, Squaredle is very similar. I definitely like a challenge versus a quick finish. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas!

  16. Hello Patti! Hey, Art just saw that HELLO is 5 words. Gotta remember that. I always start with ADIEU and then STORY. I almost never get it on 3 tries. I do often get it on 4. I have crashed and burned at least 3 times. I have discovered that my son uses the same starter words as me so I've been known to cheat and use what I know since he often posts before me since he gets the words the day before half way around the world. Thank you for reminding to to do it now. My daughter got it with 4 tries this morning. My son has not done it yet. I wonder if he suspects what I'm doing....

    1. Kay,
Boy would it be hard not to cheat especially on those hard ones when you have a family member sitting on the answer.
Haven't burned yet but I haven't been doing it very long. I came close on that word that had no vowels a while back except "Y".

  17. Oh... and it's kind of a challenge with my son and daughter so I WANT to get it in 3.

  20. I play wordle every day. Keeps the brain active is my excuse. I also work on a jigsaw puzzle daily (on the phone).

Me? I haven't lost yet, but my "win" averages to the 3rd attempt.

Yikes. That really is a disappointment? I had almost that same thing this morning. My starter got 4 of the 5 letters. In a few seconds, I had the word. Almost feel cheated. Sigh.

  26. Dear Patti, I've been playing the NYT wordle since last April and I am truly addicted. I have a learning disability that affects my spelling, so I frequently need six turns, and I can get maybe 35 in a row and then I just get to one that totally eludes me. It's so enjoyable! Happy, happy new year. Like you, I'm thinking that 2023 is truly going to be special. Peace from Dee
