I'M SURE THE HUMOR IS COMING

I have an appointment today in a few hours to have both ends scoped--a colonoscopy and an endoscopy--so I will let someone else basically write my post.

I have chosen Dave Barry who is a Pulitzer Prize winning humor columnist for the Miami Herald.  Hey, go for the best I say.

Dave wrote a really funny column several years ago about his first colonoscopy. Oddly, I have found his graphic yet funny account quite comforting. If you are facing one or have all ready had one, you can appreciate his take on the preparation and procedure. If you are still putting it off, I hope you will consider taking the plunge. It can be a lifesaver and--the prep will seem funny eventually.

Yesterday was a bit busy as I hung out close to the bathroom so I didn't get any visiting done. Today I am very sleepy and 3 pounds lighter which implies that I just might have been full of --it.  So I am off to be probed and  shall leave you in his capable hands. Enjoy the virtual trip via Dave.

See ya later on your posts when I get home, had a nap, rehydrated, eaten some almost solid food and am feeling less---empty.

TUESDAY MORNING:   I am so happy that so many of you know and appreciate Dave.    He is a hoot and thank you so much for your good wishes. The tests went partially well.  The endoscope went OK but they couldn't do the colonoscopy since it seems  I have a fragile colon.  Another blessing of old age Sooo, today I go for a barium enema--doesn't that sound delightfully appealing? The worst part is that I have had to keep my colon sparkling clean for the second procedure so I still haven't eaten anything solid since Saturday around 4 PM.  That rumble you hear is an unbelieving stomach.

See ya soon.

So glad you know Dave. He cracks me up. This does seem to be a right of passage for us doesn't it. Good luck on yours.

Oops, sorry about that but they are a smart precaution. Remember, honey is a clear liquid and will give you a wee bit of energy.

    1. Gail,
Well not quite done yet. They couldn't do the colonoscopy so as a back up, I am having a barium enema today. Still in hunger mode.

Actually, the prep wasn't too bad. Good thing I like Gatorade.

    1. Thanks but I still have one more to go since the colonoscopy couldn't be done. Then I will be done. However the endoscope did turn out well.

  11. Now this is a subject I know something about having just experienced both these wonderful procedure in September. I'm grateful we have the colonoscopy as I've always got polyps. This time I have to go back in 3 years. Grrrrrrr. What irritates me is every time I go the clean out prep used in the previous test has been discontinued by the FDA. This time I simple could not swallow the first one. Had to go back and get something else. The prep is bad but the test itself is a breeze.

    1. Linda,
Like Dave says, you turn over and then you wake up and it is over. That part is so easy. Sorry you have to do it so often. Mine was Mirilax mixed with 64 oz of Gatorade. Ok for the first 30 oz, then it got disgusting.

  12. I hope this goes well for you. I had this exact same procedure. Was tired when I got home. You have had more than your share of medical stuff the last few years. Hope this is the end of it.

Ah, it's just part of the privilege for having lived a long time. After today, I hope I am done for a while also.

  13. I hope your scoping reports were good.
I have had two colonoscopies. The procedure is nothing. The prep is awful. Knowing you are healthy is worth it.

One was, the other was inclusive so I am doing a different test today while I am still hungry and empty. I am not particularly worried, just anxious for something to chew.

    2. Linda R,
      oops---the should have been inconclusive.

  14. Holy moly- that is crazy! No food??!!! I had both a couple of weeks ago. The prep is always the worst part, and other than the deductible bill, I guess it was alright. I still have GERD and stomach and gut issues. I hope everything turns out alright for you. And food in your belly soon...I would be so grumpy!

  15. Terri,
It ended up being 3 days with out solid food. I was beginning to talk to a basketball named Wilson. That is over now and food is calming my rumbling stomach. Ahhh. Still don't know anything for sure.

  16. Hate the prep, love the Burger King right after!

    1. Linda,
You are so right. It took me 3 days to finally have solid food but the cheese burger might have been the best ever.

  18. The first time I had a colonoscopy I had the endoscopy too. The GI Doc was one I knew fairly well and he was a great kidder. After I woke up he told me had saved me a lot of money by using the same scope for both procedures !! EYEWWW...

    1. Ginnie,
Ha ha, Mine smirked promising he would use different scopes. I guess if they did the upper first it wouldn't be too bad if they economized.

  19. Hope you are enjoying eating again by the time you get this. Starvation before unpleasant examinations is simply not fair at all! Barium is useful for showing what is going on inside, and it is sometimes helpful to potters as well as a glaze ingredient! There are some rather spectacular turquoise blues that barium and copper can bring about!

  20. Oh no, Patti. I'm so sorry! That prep is just the worst part. My brother (the coward) still hasn't had a colonoscopy and he's 63! I'm on his back, but he won't listen. I'll keep my fingers crossed that all goes well with your barium enema.
