SIGH

The following is a sports post which I know brings on the yawns for many of you but my heart is hurting so I must continue. Feel free to skip today and just know I am wishing you a spectacular holidays since I won't be posting again till they are over.

For the ones who stuck around, just know my heart is heavy. Those who have been with me a while know I am a huge Miami Marlins baseball fan. Winning is nice but sadly being a true Marlins fan means winning is not necessary to remain a fan. Just so my boys and the owners do their best is all I ask.

This past year wasn't special but we did finish second in a weak division. That was an vast improvement over the previous year. We were on the way up and  had the feeling with just a few more pieces, we "could be contenders" to paraphrase Marlon Brando.

My team has won two World Series over the years and both times the team was dismantled the very next year with all the good players being sold. Sickening.

Our team was recently bought by Derek Jeter's group which we thought would be a positive but he has set about trading off all our good players and dumping salaries as his first move. I get attached to my players and don't take kindly to them being shipped off.  Boo-hiss Derek Jeter.

You are welcome Yankee fans as you now have the national league MVP and 59 home run hitter Giancarlo Stanton in your murder's row lineup. He was first to go.

I always said he was the only player I wanted to see naked and Sports Illustrated obliged.
Bye bye you big beautiful man. Your turns at the plate were can't miss.

You are welcome Seattle Mariners to Dee Gordon. A gold glove caliber fielder, league leading base stealer, spark plug and fun in the dugout asset. I will miss your sparkling double plays, lay out catches, bunt base hits and mile wide grin. Bye, bye Dee.

You are welcome Cardinals as you enjoy a huge arm in the outfield and a consistent power bat at the plate in Marcell Ozuna. You won't be sorry. Bye Big Bear.

The only plus for me is that when we play their new teams, I will get to watch them again and know that they are being treated decently and at least have a real chance of winning a title. They deserve that.

There are others on the block ready to go. Pretty sure Christian Yelich and J T Realmuto will soon be gone. Who ever gets them will be blessed.   Once again we have become the farm team for Major League Baseball.

If they landed on a team you follow, treat my young men well. They will entertain you and bring you joy and extra wins. I'll miss you boys. Sigh.

Thank you for letting me vent. I needed this and feel a smidgen better.

I'm taking a small break from posting but will still be around to visit.  Will see you next year--January 2nd most likely, so I hope you have a marvelous holidays with many smiles, warm hugs and phone calls from those you love.

  5. You have my sympathies. I don't understand the Marlins, if they can not make money with a World Champion Team then sell the franchise or move it, don't break it up. How they keep loyal fans like you is beyond me. Jeter was a stand up ball player, hope he has a plan, but playing the game and building a team are not one and the same. I am anxious to watch your favorite Marlin, I will think of you after each Home run.

I have always admired Jeter as a player and was excited when he bought the club. Guess we are facing another several years in rebuilding mode. I"ll have to channel my Cubbie gene to make it through.
Enjoy the big man. Between he and Judge, you are in for some eye popping homers.

Thank you for stopping by and commenting. You are obviously aware of the dismantling. I was sick when they failed to resign Ichiro. He was a real favorite of mine. I hope someone picks him up. He has a lot of baseball left in him.

  11. I'm not a baseball fan but I heard that is what they did to the Houston Astros team - cut it down to lower salary players and then surprise - a big win. I'm sure I would feel the same about gutting a team I loved and watched.

I am pretty sure the Astro plan is being followed by many teams. It is just so hard waiting for the building years to take effect as your favorites are scattered far and wide.

  13. We all loved Ichiro here in Seattle, even those of us who don't pay much attention to baseball. But as you know I am a sports fan, just of different sports. I know what it is like to have to say goodbye to team favorites. We never know from year to year who will make it back on the sounders roster, and right now our Seahawks are struggling, what with serious injury problems and holes left from trades last year. There is talk of "the end of an era". We'll see. I have to remind myself that these sports teams are just a form of entertainment and it doesn't pay to get too attached.
Hoping you have a wonderful holiday season.

    1. Linda,
I know most teams go through this and we have to realize the owners are running a business and thier main goal is profit. It is only the fans that get attached. It has just happened so many times with this team. Sigh.

  14. Sorry to see your team being picked apart like this, hope the guys go on to bigger and better careers and your newly formed team knocks it out of the park!

  17. An excellent essay on a few of the worst aspects of American Capitalism a.k.a. Greed. You find a company not doing well but has a few valuable assets. You buy it at an undervalued price. You sell off the prime assets for a premium price making closing the business putting many out of work, destroy towns or you sell it off to someone else who think they can fix it by starting. In any case you came out ahead money wise. In any case you, the new owners might want to move to a new city that will build them a new ballfield..... I hope all the Marlin fans including Patti come out of this ok

Wouldn't it be nice if the owners went into the deal buying a franchise with heart instead of bottom line concern? That is said by someone without the funds to throw away on such a dream. Guess I can't blame them not wanting to throw their money down a rabbit hole. Wonder what would happen if the fans bought the team? Probably colossal confusion trying to reach a consensus. Guess I will just grit my teeth and hope for the best. Pretty sure I'll get attached to the new crop in time. Sigh.

  20. Those are the tactics of organized crime — sell off the assists and pocket the miney. Can appreciate your feelings, but hope your players are able to continue playing to their potential.

Happy holidays to you — enjoy your break.

    2. Wow — all the typos in my comment — should have enlarged the print for proof reading — assist should have been assets — and miney is money — no, I wasn’t holiday tippling in the cooking sherry! Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year wished for you!

  21. I read this RIGHT after you posted it --and then forgot to comment. You know how I love sports also... I didn't even know that your team had been sold --but I have read about many of your good players going to other teams.

It's all a big BUSINESS --and like so many other things going on in our country, there's no loyalty anymore... It's all about the almighty dollar....

I was just watching the Tennessee Titans play football on Sunday --and sat there at that mediocre team thinking about all of the money that those guys get for playing so poorly! ha .....

I guess that is why college football is still my favorite sport --since, so far, it's not all about the money... BUT--someday that may change also... Oh well--- tis life I guess.

Maybe the young guys will do well this year on your team.... You'll just have to fall in love with some of the new ones!!!!!!

    Merry Christmas.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  23. Dear Patti, both the Minnesota Twins (I live in MN for 38 years) and the Kansas City Royals (I've lived here now for nearly 9 years) have been--most of the time--farm clubs for the big leaguers!!! just as you say the Marlins are. I'm not a fan of Jeter and so I'm not surprised at what has happened.

I so hope that this coming season the Marlins will surprise you with their wins!!! Peace and happy holidays..

  24. I can feel your pain. Ultimately, Derek Jeter's hands were tied courtesy of Jeffery Luria cheapskate ways. But look on the bright side, Miami will competitive again long before my time, the NY Mets, will ever be.

    1. G.B. Miller,
You named the main culprit in Luria. He took us down the rabbit hole. I guess the main hope for us both is that we are in a weak division. If we don't make it, hope your Mets do.
