OUT OF SERVICE FOR A WHILE

Hopefully this will be a short break but one I must take.   My doctor thinks I have a condition called  occipital neuralgia. Basically trapped or pinched nerves in my neck. This is not life threatening at all and rather rare. Three people in 100,000 rare.  Think I need to buy a lotto ticket.

Anyway, I have these really sharp stabbing pains in my head that also affect my eye and ear.  The beauty is they last only seconds, the ugly is that they happen often.  Sometimes 6 times in 4 minutes, sometimes a half hour between them. They are so sharp that I do groan and sometimes holler when they strike.

Anti-inflammatory medications  are recommended to reduce the inflammation but due to my heart problems I can only take Tylenol which doesn't really help.

My PC gave me 8 muscle relaxing shots in my neck Friday to relax the muscles but that didn't work. I go back Monday but am on my own for now. Will also see my chiropractor on Monday to see what he can do. He thinks he can help. Keep toes crossed for me.

If any of you have had this or know of someone who has had it and are aware what may help, let me know.  Otherwise, just keep good thoughts for me as I get through this.

See ya on the other side.

  3. Ouch, hope that clears up soon. I had c6 spinal compression that required surgery years ago. Caused the electric shock pain down the arm. Not the same, but posture can help. Push your chin in and pull your neck up and straight may relieve nerve pressure. Intermittent heat and cold might also help. Could even be a localized cold or infection that will clear up in time. Best wishes that it gets better soon.

  4. Oh no... I'm so sorry, Patti. I've never heard of such a thing. I'm hoping you get better real soon and that your chiropractor will have the perfect cure. Looking forward to hearing how you're doing.

  5. I do not know about this problem but my old boss had severly pinched nerves in his neck and after trying millions of doctors and drugs, he found that botox (like the wrinkle solution) eased the pain. Who knew. My dear friend also gets botox for her forehead wrinkles and since she started getting them her frequent migraines have stopped. Just an fyi in case any of your doctors recommend it.

  8. Sounds horrible. Like Joeh, I had a pinched nerve in my neck that caused neck pain and numbness in my arm. No fun. Retirement helped, with less stress. But I believe it was physical therapy that was the real cure. I still do some of those exercises to this day, just to keep nice and loose and pain free.

  9. You might be able to ease things with some neck stretches/exercises, also shoulder exercises, since those muscles are connected. Anything that relaxes the muscles will ease pressure on the nerves.

  17. I've never heard of occipital neuralgia, but my sister has had trigeminal neuralgia which causes a similar jolt of excruciating pain in her ear and jaw. She's had success with managing the pain with prednisone. It's a bummer, but it helps reduce the inflammation. Really hope you are helped by the chiropractor and the meds. Take care there, Patti, and get well my friend.

  21. I had a bout of occipital neuralgia in 2013 after doing some strenuous yoga that net my head the wrong way. VERY painful, woke me u0p during night. My husband is a chiropractor and adjustments did not help much but the TRIGGER POIT/Mayo fasciae therapy to all the trigger points in my scalp , my face, and neck, helped over a period of about a month. It did clear up./ Find a massage therapist or physical therapist who knows myofascial release/trigger point work. I took anti inflammatory ex’s some and they did not help.Would not do prednisone!!!!!! Trigger point worked, just took some time.

  22. Why did you have to get something rare? If there’s a next time settle on something more common and easier to find a treatment for. Meanwhile i’ll think positive thoughts for you and hope you’re over this soon. First your dog has a sprained wrist and now you have this — what’s going on at your place?

  23. Oh no, I hope you are better soon. I have had spinal issues in the neck and know how painful such things are but mine was different than this.

  24. Prayers for you that the pain will go away or that the doctors will find something to help alleviate it. Sounds perfectly awful especially when the pain is so sporadic. Really hope you will feel better soon. Ugh, our bodies do not like to co-operate with us, do they?

  25. I really want to thank everyone who has stopped by with words of encouragement or suggestions. Both were greatly appreciated and taken to heart.
I am still a work in progress with the headaches and am seeing my PC, chiropractor and as Madeline suggested, a massage therapist. No real improvement yet but I am hopeful this will soon be a memory.
Thank you again for your comfort and caring. I've said it before but mean it just as much now, "you are the best."

  26. These non life threatening ailments can be a real pain in the neck. Believe me I know as I have two many to count including in the neck....

  27. Heart problems keep us from taking good over-the-counter pain killers like Aleve, etc. Tylenol is it and not that helpful. Neck pain my problem as well and I have found that the Salonpas with Lidocaine helps a bit. Wishing you the best in your recovery.
