BLACK VS WHITE

No, this is not a post on racism.  Actually it is a fashion/sports post so there should be something for everyone.

This past weekend was supposed to be dedicated to the baseball players so that they could show their individuality.  They got to wear flashy shoes, colorful belts, socks or arm sleeves. They also got to put their nicknames on the backs of their jerseys. It was supposed to be a fun weekend for them and us.

Only problem is that the league dictated the uniforms.  They were to be monochromatic, all white or all black. White with white lettering or black with off black lettering.  Home team usually wore white and visitors wore black. I could switch channels and swear I was watching the same teams. Fifteen teams wore white, 15 wore black.

For the white uniforms, it was almost impossible to read anything on the fronts or backs of the uniforms. White on white does not show up. The boys looked for all the world like a field full of ice cream vendors searching for their trucks.  The fact that white makes you look fat was made painfully clear.

The black uniforms fared a bit better. The lettering was at least readable and the often clever nick names were fun.  They seemed to be more tailored to the men's bodies and were definitely slimming.  While the black teams looked  trim and athletic,  the white teams looked more like middle aged softball players.

Don't know how the players felt but from what I've read, the fans thought the uniforms were awful.

I have always loved wearing white as I usually have a good tan and am reasonably trim besides it gives you a built in excuse to not get roped into any dirty jobs.  Boy am I having second thoughts though after this weekend. White does nothing for the body.  Fifteen teams of professional athletes could not pull it off.  Pretty sure I have been kidding myself.

Did you watch any of the games this week end?   Sports aside, do you personally avoid wearing white?

  1. I've trended more towards white this summer. Reason: mosquitos and deer flies are less attracted to white.

Good to know. Hope it works for ticks also.

  2. I am not a sports fan and didn't even know there were games on this weekend. The black and white uniforms seems like a crazy idea!

I only wear black and year around. Stains always find me in white.

    1. Jean,
I would do that but for the cat hair. Somehow it doesn't show up on white. Maybe I need to trade Minnie in on a black cat?

  3. I didn't know about this, but it makes no sense to have all white uniforms with white lettering. I wear a white blouse or t-shirt now and then, but much prefer purple or pink, occasionally black, but not often. Thanks for letting me know about this, Patti, I'll try to find some more pictures to enjoy seeing athletes looking fat. :-)

    1. Djan,
I know you are really partial to purple. That is almost as slimming as black. Have fun looking for the chubby athletes:)

  4. I like white shirts, but often covered with a colored sweater or jacket. Not while I am cooking or eating red sauce though.

Know what you mean. Something about red and white. They love to mingle.

  5. Oh Patti it was AWFUL!! I heard the Dodgers went to MLB in protest and lost. I couldn't read the nicknames and they looked damn stupid. I am glad that is over with and we don't have to see that again. I hope MLB learned from their mistakes. And you are so right when I flipped on TV I had no idea who the hell was playing.

I know. I spent most of the weekend in a state of irritation. What were they thinking?

  6. I didn't watch any of it, but your description definitely conveyed the view. There was a time back in the 70s when I wore white all the time. The other day I tried on a white shirt, a hand-me-down from my SIL, and took one look in the mirror and said out loud, "No Way!"

Bet you didn't wear it to Woodstock and all the mud. It really does distort the human body.

  7. Very bad idea...I suspect they will not do it again!

I felt that the white uni's had an advantage with the pitch of a white ball coming out of a white background, but the Yankees seemed to hit ok so maybe that was not a factor...still was a bad idea.

That is why the pitchers had to wear black hats. It was for the batters benefit. I'd have really been upset but we took a series for a change. Maybe white is our thing.

  8. Didn't watch the fashion train wreck but had a great attack of hilarity at your descriptions. I have always been a magnet for spills, awkward encounters with substances that await vulnerable white apparel. Did wear white for wedding, though, and surprise, no disasters!

Glad you enjoyed. Yes, it takes a confident person to wear white and you must have been on your wedding day.

  9. I rarely wear white - too monochromatic with my hair and skin. I have lots of black though - I do think black is slimming.

Yes with your white hair, black would really suit you. You are thin enough though not to have to worry about the fake pounds white adds.

  10. I passed on major league and watched the Little League World Series. I wear white blouses and in summer I have a couple of pairs of white cotton pants.

  11. Carolyn,
I wish I had watched the Little League Series.
At least even though my team looked like painters, they did manage a series win for the first time in a long time.

  12. I guess my two boys would know what you are talking about but the sports world leaves me cold so I am in the dark … does that qualify me for the black versus the white ????

Congrats on the win. My Marlins overcame the color and managed to take a series for the first time in a long time. Hum--

  14. I avoid wearing white because I'm a slob...I always manage to spill something.

I didn't see any baseball, my time was spent watching Canadian football. My team are Green and White. I'd hate to have to scrub those uniforms.

Our home games the team wears white but it is not this glaring almost day glow white they had to wear this week end. I laughed when one of our guys slid into base and his uni was solid dirt colored.

  15. No baseball for me, just soccer, and yes, sometimes teams were white, but soccer players have NO body fat so they look fine. I have some white pants, both dress and casual, but I don't wear them often. I like white tops with black bottoms.

I have watched some soccer and have noticed that they are really lean and muscled. No over eaters there.

  16. I've avoided wearing white most of my life. Simply because it's too hard to keep white, white. Even after washing sometimes the item doesn't look properly white anymore. These days, with so may artificial fabrics, in particular elastic bands on underwear, anything which starts out white turns grey in the wash, even when only white things are in the machine.

    1. River,
It is hard to keep whites white. It takes special washing additives to keep up the image. Would hate to be the person in charge of washing team uniforms.

  17. Missed the games, but saw a post about the uniform color choices and thought to myself- well that ain't gonna work...white on white and black on black. No one will be able to know who is who. I already have trouble reading the player's name on a regular uniform. :)

    1. Terri,
It was impossible to read the players names and since they were using nick names, identity of the other players was hit and miss. Stupid idea.

Actually this was about baseball which corresponds a bit to your Cricket. Think you Brits have the game of football named more properly. Our version uses hands much more than feet.

  21. Dear Patti, I don't watch baseball although a friend keeps me informed about what's happening with the Royals in Kansas City. However, she didn't mention anything about the uniforms.

As to white, ever since I wore the white wimple in the convent i've been aware that the color does nothing for me!!!!! NOTHING! But I still wear white T-shirts with pictures on them--mostly of cats. So long as a T-shirt is X-large, making it really roomy around my body, I'm content. Peace.

  22. I like white blouses...with faded blue jeans. But black...I wear a lot of black. Oh, and HATE white shoes. Other than our wedding day, I have not owned a pair of white shoes (sneakers, yes).

  23. I try not to wear white because it causes rain. I also don't know anything about sports.

  24. I'm afraid I don't watch much sports. That fellow didn't look too bad in white though. I try not to wear white too much because mom says I get dirty too quickly. I'm just not careful enough. I did take a photo in white this summer though and I was just thinking I must have gained 20 pounds.

  25. I never wear white and nearly always wear black. The thing that I believe makes me look fatter is wearing a top that's highly patterned all over, if it's on the front, back and sleeves, I look like I'm wearing a pair of curtains and adds on about 14 pounds!
